Twice now my 2008 Prius would not start. First time, When pressing the brake and pressing the start button all of the dash lights lit up including the red triangle but it wouldn't shift into drive, or reverse. Eventually lights faded and had to charge the battery with cables from another car. 2nd time would not start. All dash lights were on including the red triangle. The car would not go into drive or reverse. I kept trying to put it into DRIVE and REVERSE while waiting several minutes in between each try time I tried. Eventually, the engine did engage and was able to put it into drive. I also remembered something else that has been happening recently. When the car has started and I've put the shifter into the DRIVE position….it actually DOES NOT go into the drive position, but actually move to the REVERSE position even though I have not moved it to the reverse position. When I then move it back to the DRIVE position…. the engine makes a loud clunking noise as if the engine is shifting its position in the engine compartment. Any ideas about what’s happening? My 2008 car has 277,000 miles on it with the original hybrid battery. We did replace the 12 V battery.
Read codes anyway. I've seen these gen2 shifters ful of coffee literally. They can stick because of it too. I imagine the liquid and sugar as it dries is quite un electrical etc. you've not mentioned park on level surface p lock message on MFD sooo.
