Got a giggle today. The recent purchase of my gen4 ‘16 base. I bought it one owner dealer serviced. I previously reviewed all service records and thought wow she did a nice job. I also own a gen3 and have never used Toyota fluids to the chagrin of many proponents of their products. Back to the the giggle The service records on the gen4 dealer serviced vehicles performed at a REAL dealer 1. Wynns transmission service:CVT fluid 2. Oil additive BG:Moa 6 ozs recommended with oil change( god only knows what she paid 3. I see a brake fluid exchange- lol it’s not identified…but I have a sneaky suspicion that it could “DEW STOPS U” dot dot dot dot (4) 4.There’s a “ac refresh” listed which I imagine is a scented freshener lovingly applied to the cabin filter or below to soften the blow of our everyday phew. All in I see a confirmatory indicator of dealerships and brands to promote “ specialty “ fluids to consumers all the while utilizing whatever products they can sell to unsuspecting consumers. I’m glad I used Kirkland oil and valvoline CVT fluid and I can’t remember the coolant but purty sure I got it at Walmart for my gen 3 and will continue this on the gen4 . PS : minor plug or advertisement for seafoam and Techron: no basis in fact - I just for no apparent reason or benefit- use these products.
As far as I know the ONLY fluid Toyota gets adamant about is Toyota ATF WS, for the transaxle. And they don't even recommend changing it. Pretty poor excuse for a conspiracy... I stick with Toyota brand DOT3 brake fluid, and Toyota Super Long Life coolant, jeven though they're not mandatory, ust because. They don't insist you use them, but I figure they should be compatible with what's in there. I doubt they're getting rich off me. I'm using Kirkland 0W20 too. Reluctantly, I was using bulk Toyota 0W20, purchased in a container I brought into service, but about 5 years back they started raising the price, finally refused to sell it thus. Fine by me, the price was through the roof.
