In a move to prevent poor people from owning EVs (at least 50% of all Americans), the National Fire Protection Association has voted to outlaw homeowner-installed EV charging stations to make it so expensive, only the most wealthy can afford the cost. "home-charger company Emporia, and other charging stakeholders ... signed a letter that states, “...Article 625.4 creates a new barrier to getting ... a permit, and has a perverse incentive for the homeowner to lie and say they are installing a receptacle for a non-EV purpose.” Another Dumb Electrical Code Change Could Ban DIY EV Charger Installs
When you look at the cost of running a pair of romex wires and adding a 220 breaker DIY style it's only a few hundred bucks in material to do a relatively low amp 220 circuit. But when you look at the cost of hiring an electrician to do that work it costs thousands of dollars because they by profession can get these permits processed much more efficiently than DIYer could do, especially in my state. So whether they want to create more financial barriers to EV home charging or not, there's plenty of them already.
'a person could claim to be installing an outlet for a welder, then plug in an evse after final inspection.' count me in
Yep... As long as your homeowners insurance covers ALL types of electrical fires in garage you should be good to go.
Here in Australia, you only have to get anything electrical inspected and certified, as well as being installed by a licenced electrician with a contractor number etc, if the supply is connected to the grid or if you are doing the work for hire or reward. If it is wired into an off grid system, no rules apply, and as long as it can be shown to comply with the relevant Australian Design Rules, the insurance remains valid. It infuriates the authorities and the licenced sparkies, but there is nothing they can do about it ..... Because we have such great solar over here and the authorities pay so little for what is fed back into the grid, many households are choosing to feed their solar into a battery bank and charging the EV from that ..... free fuel you can access at home T1 Terry
Q.E.D. If you have to prostrate yourself before some building or electrical inspector to have a dryer outlet put in your garage? EVs have not 'arrived' yet. After all.....no insurance company would say anything about a garage fire where a petrol car was stored - 'eh? Or a lawnmower? Line trimmer? WHY no insurance denial for improperly stored gas cans??? Why no permits? Inspections? The only enforcement mechanisms that force people to hire "approved" people to "certify" the DIY installation of a simple outlet - OR install it themselves - would be to deny you the use of the local electrical grid - right? SO... One easy solution MIGHT be to collect solar energy for one's one use. No.... Not a 'grid-tied' system. Let's JUST suppose that with a few BATTERIES energy could be stored and used at the premises. Solar is REALLY NOT that far away from that reality if you ask EVangelists. Right? What then? Let's say............you collect and use something ELSE....in like manner.............rain water, for example! That's a GOOD thing - right? Water Conservation? ...right? States Where It Is Illegal To Collect Rainwater (2025) | Today's Homeowner Building codes are a good thing! (But only WHEN you have good governance!)
I follow this off-grid youtuber in your part of the world: Max & Occy - YouTube I've learned alot about off grid infrastructure watching this channel....
I read the article and was wrong. But I did learn I can still install a range outlet with a permit under the new code. They aren’t ever going to record me plugging an ev in, if I have one. I thought you had to get an electrician. Now more people are going to pull a permit and diy ev outlets, as before they didn’t know an electrician is not required to add outlets.
If you live on free soil, you're.....um.....'permitted' to install an outlet in your house. You're also OBLIGATED to do it correctly!!
Maybe, better check with your building dept, if there is one. Otherwise it is required to get a permit to put an outlet in. It not all about your rights, others have rights that say houses need to be safe to not burn the neighbors down with them. It’s like at two years old we start telling our children don do things that can harm others. Of course the leader now was never taught this, but he still acts like he is two years old. Example, going after those election workers when they did nothing wrong. They had to move from their homes and hide their names. What about their rights? You voted for that.
I make my own choices. You can stay in the fog with the cult of 47, where a president can name people, lying about them in the worst ways imaginable, and those people have to hide and leave their homes because of maga death threats to their whole family. It’s your choice.
