I noticed in a lot of Prii this sticker is below the Park button. My 2007 doesn't have it. Is this something that a dealer sticks on there? Or did they drop it in 2007? I think it looks kind of tacky. Imagine someone driving a high tech car like the Prius, and not knowing what the P button is for. Anyhow, the P is set automatically if you forget and just power the car off.

My 2007 Touring had a sticker, but it came off easily without much prompting.

I peeled mine off after a few months. It was bubbling up and looked gross. Besides, I thought it was dumb (duh!).

I either took mine off at the dealership or when I got home. After reading the sticker, I pretty much knew the routine.

    So far, so good.

No, mine didn't either. I would guess that the sticker was intended to be temporary only.

Never seen one. My 2006 certainly never had one. Oh... and I also never press the P button when I park and turn the thing off.

Er what? You say that if you forget to press P, P is engaged automatically when you power off?

I'm not at all sure about that.

I came out to the car once. It appeared to be off. It was off, actually. I did my usual routine and the car immediately started sounding this alarm and scolding me, telling me to use Park when stopping the car. Since my husband had been the previous driver and it was day 3 or so of ownership, we were telling each other that he must not have put it in P. We surmised that if it is not in P, it will somehow use battery power and eventually run down the battery. However, this did not actually happen. The battery was not depleted at all.

It was a rather nonsensical alarm, since I was aout to drive away and not at all wanting to turn off the car and exit it. We tried powering down and back up again, but still it complained. Finally, I turned it off for a few minutes and back on. All was well.

So now, I read this amazaing fact tat Park engages automatically? If this is true, why have the Park button at all?

What am I missing here? What was that alarm all about then?

The Park definately engages when you power off...I rarely use the P button. But, on occasion, I'll want to put it in park while at the drive-through window at the bank or McDonalds or whatever without shutting the car down completely. It's handy in those situations.

Your experience you describe you definately had not powered down completely.

My 2006 still has the sticker.

As for not needing to press P when you power off, that's true.

But I always press P first, after two incidents where I pressed Power quickly upon stopping and it didn't immediately power off. Almost got into trouble. At least if I press P I know the car won't move.

I will occasionally use the "P" button when I'm setting up a new destination in the map program, or if we go through the Drive-In & decide to eat our goodies in the car. I never use it when I'm parking the car at the end of the day!

Never saw this "Sticker" that's been mentioned. Is there an image of it somewhere?

You might not be sure about it, but I am. And so is just about everybody else. ;) As others have said, sometimes the car doesn't turn off - in that case, it won't be in park either. If you DO get the car off with the power button it will be in park automatically. Every time. For sure.

The reason the P button is there is so Evan can safely stop at McDonald's without shutting down the car.

Okay I really want to understand this. Why, if it goes into Park automatically, would it freak out with an alarm and a message saying to put the car in park before turning it off? I can't recall the exact wording of the message. But I do know the following.

    1. The car had been turned off. I know this, because I know what the screen looks like if the car is on. I have tested all of that out, by turning it off and on without my foot on the brake, and then with, and I realize that the behavior of the screen dependns on whether your foot is on the brake when you turn the car on. Of coruse, you will now probably tell me I am wrong about that too, but I am just alerting you to all of my supositions here, as lame as they may be.

    2. I was NOT attempting to park or turn off, or exit the vehicle. I was trying to drive, yet the alarm was sounding.

So, if the problem was not what it said the problem was --- that park must be used piror to turning the car off -- why did this event occur?

Your point is well taken that it is important to have park so that you can use it when you want to stop the vehicle for some reason, take your foot off the brake, and yet not turn it off. Actually, I would just turn the car off, but I am an idiot, so I guess I just don't get these fine points.

I really, would like to know why we triggered this endless, very alarming alarm! Of course, we will stop using the park button, now that you have explained this to us.

to get that warning on the MFD you have to have one of the doors not fully closed. You can test out the warning by holding your foot on the brake and opening the door with the car in gear or park. If you watch the gear selection indicator on the dash you actually can see it go into park just before it shuts down.
