Tesla released this annual environmental report.

Sad to say, the CEO went nuts which turns this otherwise pretty report into so much hokum. I bought a Tesla to save money, not because they were a leading environmental company. But Tesla shows by example that "green" is cheaper than the traditional business model.

Creating a Safer, Cleaner, More Enjoyable World
In 2024, the Tesla community avoided releasing nearly 32 million metric tons of CO2e into the Earth’s atmosphere.
    Safer
Autonomous transportation will make our roads safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike.
    Cleaner
Our zero direct-emission products already contribute less climate-warming carbon and less fine particulate pollution into the atmosphere than the burning of fossil fuels.
    More Enjoyable
Our products are designed with an autonomous world in mind and are already engineered to work together to maximize their impact, giving people time back to do what they love.

OT to that Mars movie. Great fun and some science errors got a lot of discussion (among people who do that to movies). Set aside the matter of ionizing radiation which you would not want to do as a Martian stranded or otherwise. Driving around with a plutonium thermoelectric generator as seat buddy is not actually the worst thing.

Tesla the automobile - did they not have a recharge station in Calif Central Valley powered by diesel generator out back? Kind of a hoot.

I'm also watching one of the StarTrek reruns while suspending how I deal with "real live." <GRINS>

In 2016, I had gotten my first EV, a 2014 BMW i3-REx. It carries a 630 cc, two cylinder gas engine that drives a generator to sustain the battery charge. In effect, it carries its own EV charger when beyond the battery range.

I also installed an automatic, 16 kWh emergency generator at the house sized to handle the house and charging the BMW. Every week, it runs a 10 minute maintenance cycle to make sure it is in working order for an extended power outage. I got it to help keep my late wife safe when I might not be home.

Today, an array of solar panels generates up to 4.8 kW during the day. I charge the EV cars when the panels are making electricity. Often complimented by solar energy previous stored in a small solar storage battery. In effect, I'm using today's fusion generator, our Sun, instead of only stored solar from fossil fuels that came from the same energy source.

I'm not opposed to using fossil, nuclear, or renewable power to charge my EVs and make my home and life comfortable. Just they are more affordable than the alternatives.

I was just thinking about that story(read the book, didn't see the movie) on the nuclear battery on the drive into work.

Don't know how it is today, but the past use of the generator at that Supercharger location was for heavy traffic on holidays and such. I think the battery swap station had been there. Which taught us people rather wait for a free charge than pay for a swap.

    I would add:
    • independence from vendor - the recall and crushing of the EV1s taught by example why one never wants to be dependent on the "good graces" of the manufacturer. My six years of Tesla ownership and maintenance has re-enforced that opinion. It is why I'll probably keep the BMW i3-REx rather than replace it with a more efficient Tesla Model 3.
    • charging locations have increased by orders of magnitude and accelerating - from proprietary and incompatible fast DC charging, adapters have made them universal which doubled my access to fast DC chargers. Free over night charging is the only thing that attracts me to a motel within commuting distance of an event. Even 110 VAC charging from a ground keeper, outside outlet works. Staying overnight at an RV park with outlets also works.
    • better EV drivers - who drive using improved and different heuristics than even the most extreme ICE drivers.
