Air conditioner

    Air conditioner on (blowing cold air) with indicator light off.....What am I missing?

    When in AUTO mode for a function, no indications are shown for that function. The 3 possible states for "A/C" are OFF (no light), ON (light), AUTO (no light).

    Press the A/C button until the light is off if you want it manually off.

    Press AUTO if you want it automatic. Light will be off.

    Thank You......now, how do I get it to STAY in manual/mode?......when I go to the "Climate" screen & turn "Auto/AC" off (or manual).....it won't stay ......when I turn the car off & then start it again, it reverts right back to "Auto/AC" ......no permanent "Manual" mode??

    In my 1985 Toyota Corolla LE, there were two lighted A/C buttons—blue (A/C, normal) and green (econ). The tiny bulb in the blue one burned out at one point, but I eventually got to replace it. I never figured out the difference between the normal A/C and econ though. LOL

    The following is not my car (RIP) but similar. @Mendel Leisk would love these A/C controls:

    Short version: Don't worry about it; it's working like it's supposed to.

    Long version:
    On previous gens, the Auto button was not able to completely control the A/C. The user had to turn it on or off depending on conditions. In the gen5, the climate controls have been taken up a level to give Auto complete control over A/C. Since Auto is now in charge of the A/C system, the panel isn't going to show you when it's turning on or off by the green A/C light. The system will turn on and off automatically whenever it's needed to cool the cabin or dehumidify the air.

    However, there is a way to go back to the old system if you really want it. Within the climate options in the big infotainment screen, you'll find a setting marked something like: 'A/C on Auto'. This setting is enabled by default, giving control of the A/C to Auto. If you want to manually control it like previous models, just disable the option. Once done, the green A/C light will show whether the A/C system is turned on or off at any given time......I find this only works when I shut down the car with the AC turned off, (indicator light off) the car will then restart in manual mode; AC off, (indicator light off).......however if I shut down the car with the AC on, (indicator light on) the car will then restart in the "Auto/AC" mode (AC running, but indicator light off)......again, no permanent manual mode......

    If you leave the system in the default 'A/C to Auto' and want to manually override A/C control every once in awhile to force the climate system to leave the A/C off, you can do so by double pressing the A/C button. Pressing the button once(while Auto is also engaged) will force the A/C system on(green light on), while pressing it a second time will force the A/C system off(green light back off). After this, the A/C will remain off until the Auto button is pressed, which will give it control

    Thanks for clearing that up it’s definitely different than previous systems and not surprised by Toyotas logic…but different than before

    Hopefully that all made sense.

    I do. Tactile, ergonomic, full adjustable without having to look down…, but the world has moved on.

    how about this: my parents 58 VW Bug’s high beam toggle was a button, down by your left foot.

    I think my mom's 1972 Dodge Colt (a rebadged Mitsubishi Galant-like thing) is the first car I remember us having where the high beams didn't work like that.

    I also just noticed that the 1985 Corolla GT-S AE86 Limited fuel-injected DOHC coupe I pictured has two cigarette lighters. Now, that’s pure luxury! It also had cruise control and premium radio/Dolby cassette player with PLL-frequency-synthesized AM/FM. Curiously, it also had AM stereo, which is something I was unaware of its existence until today! Mine was an AE83 carbureted SOHC sedan without all that fancy stuff, with analog-tuned radio and no cassette player.
