Hey everyone, I bought a 2016 Prius last year with minor front end damage. It ran perfectly for 8,000 miles, but with a check engine light (U0284 - Lost Communication with Active Grill Shutter). I didnt fix it at the time because I didnt notice it until I had the whole car put back together, and I was starting school in another state the next day. I decided to fix it this weekend (summer break). After pulling the bumper off, I found that a wire had been cut in the accident (brown; front driver corner). I spliced it back together using a larger (16ga) wire, then turned my car back on. A plethora of problems occurred: -My car wouldnt read my key (required pressing the key up to the start button to start) -check engine lights (see pics) -triangle warning light -“Shift System Malfunction” error message -A/C system not working I tried to fix it by: -removing the larger guage spliced in wire and connecting the small wires together then hard resetting the car (1+ hour with negative terminal disconnected). No success. -disconnecting the wire completely like it was before, then hard resetting the car (1+ hour with negative terminal disconnected). No success. -continuity tested all fuses in the engine bay (all good). -verified that there is no other wiring damage Im not sure what to do now but I cant afford to take it to a mechanic (Im a student). If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations on diagnosing the problem, I would really, really appreciate the advice. Thank you so much, Adam
I should also note one thing: Before I spliced in the new wire, the open wire leading back into the engine bay touched the subframe and I noticed a little “zap” when it happened. I’m going to try and find a wiring diagram to see what that could have affected.
