I have a 2009 Prius. When the car is driving or idle I hear this. Clicking sound coming from the hybrid drive. It's about every 8 and 1/2 seconds this sound begins and it goes for about two and a half seconds every time. It isn't accompanied by any performance issues that I can tell. But it's loud enough that I can hear it from inside the car very clearly. This recording is made from under the hood.

Does anybody have any idea what this is? Is it something I can fix myself? Thank you so much.

Is the coolant valve making this noise? Under the inverter to the front of the car. Does not sound like the brake actuator.

This is not the typical sound heard when the coolant control valve (CCV) throws its hands up. Since you said it is coming from the "hybrid drive", I'm going to say I don't think it is that.

Can you be more specific or descriptive of what you mean by "hybrid drive"? To what part are you referring?

That sounds like some rotating part trying to start up and just twitching for a while before it gets going. One of the many water pumps perhaps?

It doesn't sound like clicking to me though. More like an unsteady steam locomotive. Could it be gas puffing out intermittently from a loose exhaust joint?
