I want to add a small dashboard that displays more details than the Prius center mounted display. I have a '16 Touring model that has a lot of neat displays as I scroll through the different settings. But, I'm looking for more. Things like engine temp, RPM, oil pressure, voltage - things that I used to take for granted when I was driving my Volvo or GM. I watch shows like "Hotrod Garage" or "Bitch'in Rides", and they have multi-thousand dollars digital dashboards in their cars. I don't want that. I want something that is smaller, but lets me select from different sensors for what is displayed. If not a specific recommendation, how about some advice on what I connectivity I should be looking for. Is it ODB2? CAN? In the Prius, where is the best data coming from?
I'll close this, in case someone from the future happens to fall into this with a duckduckgo search. The "answer" was to buy an OBD2 adapter and a small Android tablet and get some freeware off the Google Play Store to parse through the Prius ECUs. Hardware: - I used the OBD Solutions "OBDLink LX" adapter (Model LX101 v2.1) about $45 from Amazon and they also sell it direct (OBDLink® - Powerful Scan Tools For Android, iOS, & Windows). It plugs into the OBD2 port and then add it as a BT device to the Android / iOS device. - I bought a $50 Android16 7" tablet from eBay. It is as "no-name" as you can find, but it's light weight with textured surface to make it easy to hold. For $50 it's better than I expected. It has 16GB RAM, GPS and WiFi. There is no SIM for cell-data, but I use my iPhone 16 as a hot-spot and connect the tablet to that when I'm driving. Software: - I downloaded the OBDLink app from Google Play store. It's free and works okay. But I also paid $14 for the car-specific enhancements for my 2016 Prius and the unlocks a lot of the hidden PID on different ECUs. It has 3 dashboards that show a lot of details and makes it easy to check some of the hidden stuff. I also downloaded DrPrius - it's free too. And it shows some of the hairy details of the HV battery I also downloaded Hybrid Assistant - it's free too. It has some more details on the Hybrid systems and battery. The neat thing is the OBDLink LX also works fine in my Nissan Leaf and LeafSpy Pro for my 2016 Leaf S. This pretty much closes this after 2 years.
