Tomorrow im going to buy a 5th gen. After spending 3 days seeing and talking and negotiating around about 16 Priuses(mostly 4th gens, Primes and some 5th gens), Ive narrowed it down to two 5th gens:

    1. A 2024 LE, Salvage title with 20k miles that ive personally inspected inside, outside, underneath and test drove, and can confidently say it's a brand new car. Inside has some scuffs here and there and one or two faint stains. Hood and bumper needed to be repainted(which was done by the seller, well enough where no one can tell, but poor enough where I can tell up close) It still has some scratches on the roof, left mirror, and even here and there on the windshied. It's still fairly expensive but only about 4k more than the nicest 4th gen Prime Premium ive seen with 110K miles. I trust that there's no hidden damage, and no actual accident occurred, yet the VIN report says the car had overturned. Most likely an insurance scam when someone couldn't make the payments on the loan anymore. There no way the car rolled over since its not caved anywhere and windshield is intact, but who really knows. Probably was driven into some bushes hence all the scratches. I hate the silver color on it and the respray doesn't help, but I'll probably wrap it anyway.

    2. A 2023 Prime LE, Clean title with 170k miles, immaculate outside and inside, literally had no idea how they drove so much in such a short time. But after running the VIN I can see it was a commercial fleet vehicle in Texas(where everything is hella far) and they preformed maintenance religiously on it(tho not sure trans fluid or water pump was changed yet, tho it would be the first thing I'd do. And I can see nobody ever even got in the back seat so it wasn't a uber or such. Tho the trunk carpet has some pilling on it like lots of boxes went in and out so maybe a parts delivery car or smth. Car drives perfectly, sounds nice and quiet(maybe even quieter than the 20k miles one) and the price is lower by about 2k than the salvage title 5th gen.
I dont know what to do, I LOVE the idea of the prime and can charge it from my minimal but sufficient solar/ battery setup that I have on the property I live, I love that its cheaper so I can spend some money on future maintenance and roof rack and maybe a hitch(I drive far and always carry a bunch of stuff I buy in different cities) I love the inverter in the trunk, which can charge my own battery/solar setup if it's low and its nighttime and the car is charged(basically a backup battery)
But the salvage regular Prius is basically brand new and won't need anything anytime soon, however its gonna leave me with no extra money for a while and its not quite as exciting as a part time EV like the prime. Tho I dont really commute anywhere, and I mostly drive far and long, the nearest town from me is about 20 miles away so I guess I can get supplies and groceries on battery only. Selling it in the future will be a total pain since most people shy away from salvage titles like the plague. While I might drive either into the ground, the Prime with such miles I will most likely keep till the end but the clean title basically says I can get rid of it fast if I ever need to.

Does anyone have any experience with really high mileage 5th gens? What's gonna start breaking and when, or with the risks of a salvage title and maybe some imaginary hidden damage that nobody can see no matter how deep they looked underneath the car or under the hood. Im thinking im going to end up with one of the highest milage 5th gen Primes and hopefully I won't break the bank fixing or maintaining it while I drive the piss out of it for years.

Wait a while and buy new? Set your sights lower, buy a gen 4? For the interim buy something else, cheaper?

Regarding 5th gen Prius, just my 2 cents: I wouldn't buy anything that doesn't come with a spare. But hey, it's a cottage industry here, buy the latest bells-and-whistles from Toyota, then retrofit the essentials.

If your a serious DIY and know their way around cars; I'd probably stick with the high mileage freeway runner.
As for the salvage car, your trying to talk yourself into excuses to buy it???? Insurance fraud; really???? You need to pull the body panel plastics to get a good look at what was really damaged. Glue & plastic is like putting lip stick on a pig - IMHO. What do you think you could get for a high mileage salvage car and will the battery & EV power train warranty be valid????

    Just spit-balling here...

Personally, I'd go with the high milage Prime. By my math, 170k works out to be about 325 miles per day(assuming 5 days a week for 2 years), with an average speed of 40mph(assuming an 8-hour day). To me, that says a lot of highway miles. I wouldn't even mind a history of 10k oil changes for a vehicle like that.

The M20A engine has been out long enough to start showing any bad trends at high milage, and none seem to be happening. The 5th gen hybrid system is technically new, but it's really just a tweak of the 4th gen system and that's been rock solid to my knowledge.

I'd take some of that $2k savings and have a complete service done to it. Oil, both coolants, transaxle fluid, and an A/C service(evacuate, weigh refrigerant, pressure test, refill) just to be safe and start your ownership on a clean slate. The A/C service is just because it's also used to cool the HV battery. I don't know if the A/C service is also in the Prius Prime maintenance schedule, but I'm pretty sure the RAV4 Prime has it in there at one of the higher milage intervals.

The only thing that might give me some pause would be if the coolant was never changed. It should have been changed at 100k and 150k. Transaxle fluid should have been done around 60k and 120k, though I wouldn't throw a fit if it was only done once at 90k.

Do a vin search on the salvage car. stat.vin ($7 compared to Carfax which is $25.) Stat.vin will have auction pics, you will see if it was sold in wrecked condition which is common. It can also say if the airbags went off, which is a sign of collision severity.

I don't have a problem with salvage cars if they are repaired properly. And the price is always lower, and the quality can be nearly as good. Get a good used car inspection. Lower miles are usually better if the repairs are good.

Ya see; that's the rub. Was it a shade-tree mechanic or a professional body & frame shop that put it back together? What corners was cut and are all the safety options functional or bypassed or turned-off? The insurance company cut the previous owner a check for at least $25K+; so you know that was the lowest repair estimate for a professional shop to fix it correctly.
Today's car's front and rear exterior body panels are mostly plastic. It can easily be snapped, tie wrapped, taped, glued together and painted over - hiding the real damage behind it. How will this car handle another collision? Was the energy absorbing baffles of the uni-body replaced? As I stated earlier; the plastic outer shell needs to come off to inspect if the repair job was correctly done.

Can't claim experience with that model, but I'd take the hi-miles one in a cocaine heartbeat

Assuming the reason for these two choices was price...neither. The TCO advantage is already lost on high mileage and a salvage vehicle just throws any TCO to the wind. While I highly attest to the reliability of Prius...all bets are off with these two. Respects, but if you can...keep looking.
