Hey everyone! Exciting news! I’ve not only discovered another Toyota model that shares connectors to the back of the MFD/Radio with the Gen 2 Prius, but I also found a company that manufactures these Tesla style screens. I'm currently collaborating with them to make sure that these radios can showcase the diagnostics menu. Even better, since they already have access to the CAN bus from behind the radio, I’m guiding them to code in some extra data points! This means you could soon see vital details like coolant and oil temperatures right on your screen—no OBD2 device needed! I’d love your input: what’s one thing you’ve always wanted to see on your Prius display? And quick question—would you prefer a volume knob or just buttons for volume control? The image here shows the units they currently manufacture. Oh, and on a un-related note, Power Inverter Wiring Kits for the Prius just arrived this week! If you're planning to install an inverter, this is the inverter wire kit you should use! I’ve tested and they work perfectly for high loads, like running an air fryer daily, without the wires overheating. Stay tuned for more updates! Oh and personally, I like the Tesla style screen with the knobs like the one I used on my blog article. https://black.jmyntrn.com/2024/12/11/elevate-your-prius-experience-with-the-android-tesla-style-head-unit-radio/
That huge screen is a bit much. I need those a vents... Better off with the screen size like in the last Pic. Would sell better too. I'd like to see a clean 5v preout. 50 watts rms per channel, at least for the front. A Digital Signal Processor. Etc. These cars are getting old, most owners won't be as willing to upgrade.
I use my 2015 Prius for offroad/overlanding primarily, so CarPlay and other "connected" features aren't too appealing to me as I spend a lot of time deliberately beyond network connectivity; I'd much rather have a good UI that brings diagnostic and monitoring to the foreground so I can keep an eye on things without having to park and pull out the TechStream laptop. No knobs, data like coolant temps, tach, voltage levels, individual sensor values, and if possible I'd love controls to bypass the drive-by-wire and send inputs directly to subsystems like brakes or traction control.
hud integration would be great, i can't upgrade the radio because i would lose the hud on the windshield
What makes you think the vents wouldn’t be relocated around the frame for the radio? I need those vents too — I never even thought of not having them. Having this radio without them would be absurd. I’m genuinely curious why you’d assume that. And I’ve got to firmly disagree with you on these cars being “too old” for owners to upgrade. Look at the Gen 2 community — people love those Prii, keep them alive, and jump at chances to put something new inside. In my case, my OEM JBL head unit’s volume knob failed, then more issues followed. I was distraught since I loved the built-in XM, but replacing it turned out better: I gave up XM, but gained a 360° bird’s-eye view and plenty of new options. Seeing you use the word overlanding makes me proud, because I’m the one who pioneered that concept in the Prius world. I’ve inspired the off-road company with what I’ve done. If you’ve got questions, hit me up. I completely agree with you about diagnostics and monitoring — nobody wants to drag out TechStream just to see temps or voltages. These head units already have the code to read off the CAN bus, so it’s just a matter of building the right GUI to surface what you want. I started down that path on my Gen 2 and can adapt it to Gen 3, I’ve just got a lot of projects in motion. I’m curious though: what exactly do you want to control on drive-by-wire — brakes, traction? I’ve actually built a device that does everything you’re describing, so I’d love to hear what your specific goal is. When I installed an aftermarket Android head unit in my Gen 3 Plug-in Advanced Tech Package, I didn’t lose HUD. So I’m curious why you believe upgrading would make you lose it. Can you explain what makes you think that?
