2020 Prime used to get high 30’s miles per charge in summer, low to mid 20’s in a Cleveland winter, which is what it was getting thru this March/April and it has never gone up. Now, in July, still getting in the mid 20’s. Is there something wrong that can be identified? Took it to the dealer who said everything looked good and it’s charging to full capacity. Suggested I go to a Prius online forum, so here I am. If this thing drops to the teens in the winter, it won’t be of much value to me. Only halfway through the 10 yr. warranty. Any chance Toyota would replace it?
This thread brings me to the lastest question. I might be in the market for a 2020 or newer prime. A 5 year old pack will have degradation. That is expected. So maybe 20 miles tops on a 2020, 2021. I know plug in prime started at 4wH capacity and I think now its around 11.2 ??? the 2025 gets 25 miles of range. What year did the Prime go to the largest size battery pack? Found it..... 13.6 on a 2023 model. before that was 8.8 all the way down to a 2016 model. So cheapest price on used will be a 2016...but also the most degradation.. Prime users. What year would you buy if you had to buy over again. This is a third car...maybe a fourth. Local and trips up to 4 hours from home.
heavy use of your AC system/heat pump had nothing to do with your EV mileage calculations going down, due to your recent heatwave? The OEM manual states 25 miles on EV and you want a new battery because your only getting 25 miles??????? One of your MID display options has a table of battery energy usage - EV vs HVAC %. If you indeed have a gen4, that should explain your lower mpg in EV mode. Don't know if that table option is available on the gen5.
I have my 20 for 2.5 years. After I got it in 23 the battery quickly climbed to 34-36 miles of range and still does. Some people here get more. When I got it was 20 miles range or something as the dealers driving habits aren’t exactly interested in such things. It may have some degradation but not showing it in any significant way to me. On some common trips I have started with like 20% charge, it doesn’t really matter, the mpg was not much different. Having some charge really helps in traffic jams, it doesn’t have to be full. Put it back into hv mode and the charge will more or less be maintained. Or can use the engine to charge within a range of %. I rarely if ever use that.
If I were to buy a used one now, I would probably buy a 2021 or 2022 Prius Prime. The EV range should still be 23-25 miles of normal driving in average weather. I would probably get around 30-35 miles of range in nice weather with my driving style. A 2021 or 2022 will still have 6-7 years left on the hybrid battery warranty and the degradation shouldn't even be noticible. According to Consumer Reports, the most reliable years are the 2022, 2021, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2019 in that order. Surprisingly, the newer 2023 and 2024 models with the bigger battery have the worst Consumer Reports reliability ratings of all the Prius Primes. You can probably assume about 1-3% battery degradation per year, which equates to about a 1 mile loss of range every 2-3 years. My 2020 Prius Prime has over 102,000 miles on it and still has almost 90% of its original EV range. My charging schedule pretty rough on my battery, but my driving style is rather gentle. I charge the car 3 times a day, 5 days a week, but I drive 55-60mph in the right lane.
