The 90-day reprieve was so they can work out the proper compensation package for those taking kick-backs - IMHO...... Go "Clean Coal"
Yep the whole planet is socialism for the ultra rich with trillions of dollars in annual government subsidies to poison the air, while all the rest of are being told that socialism is only what happens when poor people are given food or medical care that they don't deserve.
There was a time in our history, where businesses and corporations were allowed to poison our air, soil, water and feed us toxic "foods". That's why regulations and laws was setup to protect US citizens from their corrupt practices. Other third world countries was the butt of US jokes, because of how openly corrupt their governments were. Well look at us now - rolling back decades of hard fought regulations, ignoring scientific facts - because their "gut instincts" doesn't match up, firing department head because the numbers was not to the president's liking. Do we now have a king? Kiss the ring or else? YMMV don't sue me for the 'game of thrones' reference.
The diminution of coal, a view from 2017: Will the U.S. Ever Build Another Big Coal Plant? | Scientific American Retirements: Most of the planned coal capacity retirements are in the Midwest or Mid-Atlantic regions - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Nowhere to go but down for U.S. coal capacity, generation | IEEFA New ones? Proposed coal plants in the United States - Global Energy Monitor == We have discussed (around here) new electrical generation from coal in China. Those are being built and I could summarize PriusChat view that they are bad. From that basis, I cannot see how 'new coal' in the US could be good.
My joy is the cost of solar and wind have come down so much that fossil fuels are more expensive. Like Edison once said, "We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles." Solar roof project came online in the purple bills. Bob Wilson
These two post are probably representative of the "tone" of Prius Chat and slanted view of the world more than any post I have seen . Not a very open minded or inquisitive accepting view of the world for sure! Thank goodness the younger generation is running as fast as they can from this kind of thinking and bringing positivity and hope back.
May I just add: That's your open-minded opinion that you can freely express - for now..... The younger generation thinks that working multiple "gig jobs" to make ends meet is normal. I was young and stupid too at one point in my life. Positivity and hope doesn't fix problems; unless someone is willing, able, and shamed into doing their JOB properly - rather than getting punished. Punishment it what we do to correct behavior; so what do you think the message is when department heads are being fired for doing their jobs and NOT putting their 'thumbs on the scale"? This simply rewards lying and cheating - a new norm? How can we respect or trust any of this? We're seeing that being played out in 'real-time' now! My old asset has learned that it's a lot easier to nip problems in the bud early; rather than ignoring it and letting it grow and fester. Making it a lot harder and much more expensive to fix in the future. That's just my 2-cents..... Discussions like this is why forums like this exist: to pass-on knowledge and different viewpoints. Unfortunately government sponsored troll farms, computer analytics, and AI has made it economically viable and easy to target individuals, so that they can "warp", their sense of reality.
The new ones in China use newer, more efficient technology, making them less bad. The US coal plant in the OP is an old one that the power company wants to shut down because it is too expensive to operate.
Installing and maintaining those emission control devices, on those stacks isn't cheap. But from the pictures above, they clearly work!!! Just because you've renamed coal to "clean coal" doesn't make it spew out less toxins when it's burned.
