Can I install a headunit in map pocket?

You don't have to use an aftermarket head unit. Vais makes a piece that will integrate a Sirius tuner & give you an Ipod interface, and it all works with your factory head unit & MFD. You can get RCA style inputs for your amp in many ways....simple line out converter (like the Scosche SLC4) or something more fancy like
an Audio Control LCT-6 or 8.

If your dead set on using the aftermarket head unit (and losing the interaction with the steering wheel controls & MFD) there are others out there who've done it....mostly with DVD-flip out screens in the map pocket, still others who've totally replaced the factory head unit & put in a Metra kit to adapt the factory location to fit their aftermarket head unit.

I chose to keep my factory head unit, but I added the Sirius Connect tuner (integrated with factory head unit & MFD) and put an Audio Control Three.1 in the map pocket. This gives me line-out converter (to feed my amps), three band EQ, subwoofer level control, fader, sub-bass EQ and a separate volume control
to tweak the input level sensitivity.

Do a search on "map pocket" to see examples of others who put something down there.

Yep....sounds like you're looking for what many of us out here have been working towards.
Essentially, you need a pre-amp with some additional input capability.
In my system, I'm using the Sirius Connect tuner (made by Directed Electronics) that's actually made for the Toyota Solara (or Avalon, Land Cruiser, Scion Xb). I'm using the static Fix referenced in the sticky (under PriusChat's Audio & Electronics forum). This sat tuner is integrated with the Prius factory head unit, and preserves functionality of the steering wheel controls and integrates with the MFD (pre-sets vis the touch screen, artist & title displayed on the MFD). You can buy the tuner & fit kit online for about $250.

I'm taking the full range outputs out of the head unit (my Prius doesn't have the JBL external amp) and using them as input for the Audio Control Three.1 (which can take up to 100 watt inputs or more). The three.1 functions as a line level driver....giving you up to 4 volts of pre-amp output. From there
I run front, rear, & sub pairs of RCA jacks out to my amps. My Xtant 3300c has a Balanced line module
which gets rid of any pesky noise that might otherwise be there. Plus, because the Three.1 is a line level driver and has it's own volume knob, I can turn the gains way down on my amp.

I don't currently have iPod integration.....I just have an iPod shuffle I can use through the factory input that came in my 2006. Maybe someday...If I get a 30gig iPod, I'll need tolook into something more.
For now, it sounds great.....no noise, no complaints.
