Yeah, my 1970s fridge was still running pretty well when I replaced it. It just used so much electricity compared to a modern replacement that my 'frugality' it keeping it going so long had cost me the purchase price of the modern replacement more than one, maybe two times over. 20/20 hindsight....

They gave out those free lightbulbs because the lightbulb makers were trying to get all the long lasting ones out of being used so they could sell the ones designed to fail.

In college, I knew a student from Poland. His brother worked at a lightbulb factory that made light bulbs that lasted 10 years. When the factory was privatized, an American consultant was brought in to advise on how to make it profitable. All the changes were to shorten the lifespan of the bulbs to 2 years.

Energy Savings: LED vs. Incandescent Cost Calculator - Wellfithome.com
"LEDs outperform incandescent bulbs by consuming up to 90% less energy and lasting 50 times longer, which directly translates to decreased waste and reduced environmental strain. Furthermore, these advanced lighting technologies eliminate hazardous materials like mercury, providing a safer, more sustainable illumination option. Your choice of LED lighting isn’t just an economic decision—it’s a critical contribution to global efforts in combating climate change and preserving ecological resources."

My first LED bulb cost me $40, and lasted 14 years. Now they cost a dollar and last about a year.

Closer to 3-4 if you burn the cheap ones continuously.

Generally LED bulbs are rated from 20,000 to 60,000 hours and.......math.
If you live in a blue state or a socialized nation they can save enough electricity (real world) to more than pay for themselves.

and come with guarantees - if you keep your LED receipts and they fail prematurely the vendor/manufacture replaces them at no cost.

    Nope.
    You're just being you again.

    Not everyone is stupid.
    Everybody DOES do stupid stuff.
    Yes......believe it or not.......EVEN YOU.

Buying an LED at a convenience store is not necessarily stupid when one considers that TIME is our most precious resource.
Complaining about the quality of a dollar store LED bulb can be construed as a stupid act.

When I moved into my city house about 12 years ago I changed out every bulb in that house and I use LEDs exclusively.
The older lady in the house probably conflated "those stupid ALGORE corkscrew bulbs" with the newer LED ones or just could not understand that even 12 years ago you could buy different temperature units.

I'm not going to say that none of them have gone out - but I'm not sure that I remember that any of them HAVE gone out.
I simply do not think about it because I do not HAVE TO think about it.
ANOTHER instance of time - money - effectiveness balance.
I live in the US South, and I think my electricity is about kWh x $0.08700 - but there's also a daily fee.
EVEN AT MY rates it simply does not make walking around sense to use a heating element with a 10% lighting efficiency when an LED flips that script.
If I lived in some nearly uninhabitable frozen waste land above I40 then the waste heat from an Edison bulb might be a value add.
I cannot speak to that point.
The average lifespan of a standard incandescent bulb is around 1000-2000 hours which means that even if LEDs only lasted 10% as long as they do it would still be cost effective to use them instead.
Especially if you popped for another dollar or two and purchased them at a big-box store!

    SO.....
If you're REALLY offended than I offer an apology that is as sincere as that offence.
If you feel that I have violated forum policy then I invite you to kick it upstairs to a mod for a judicial review.....

Just wipe away the tears and smash the "report" button on the bottom left hand side of this thread as pictured below.

ALSO - for the frequently offended in the group there is an "ignore user" feature in this forum.

Ignore user much improved, thanks | PriusChat

Stupid people cannot use this feature, which would be another opportunity for you ... ;)

We’ve got a potato peeler, the basic, all-metal one. Has a date stamped on inside of handle, 194X, maybe 1943. Never had to sharpen it, the blade opening somewhat widened from decades of use. Where it came from, mine or my wife’s families, is a mystery at this juncture. Anyway:

it took a bad bounce when returned to the drawer one time, so that next time the drawer was opened it jammed somehow, and got terminally bent. I got a replacement on Amazon, ostensibly the same material and build.

From the outset I found that one required about double the pressure to peel properly, and needs the the cutters passed over a porcelain cup bottom or sharpening steel, every blessed use. different grade of steel I guess.

I kept the old one, haven’t got the heart to chuck it.

On another thread, I posted about our Gen 2 just doing a 1,000km round trip in 10 driving hrs, so an average of 100km/h. It returned a fuel consumption of 5.2ltrs/100kms, it has 344,500kms on the clock, doesn't use oil and is one of the best investments I've ever made, the '08 ex taxi Prius that ended up doing 750,000kms has the award for the best money ever spent, cost under $2,000 and is only in the back of the workshop yard because I needed the brake pads for the '06 Prius on a long weekend  Then I pinched the new traction battery out of it and that was that .... it's a spares unit now, not because it failed me ... it just wasn't smart enough to hide
