I am giving serious consideration to totaling out my Prius. KBB value is going to be VERY low. I put in a brand new hybrid battery just a few years ago -- between that, a brand new bumper, brand new tires, and smaller things like head rests, radio, etc... what is the best avenue for an inexperienced, private seller to make back a small return on parts that are worth more than the car collectively?

It's good to be able to part the car out, but you have to consider what you're going to do with the left over car? The most expensive parts are Battery, Catalytic converter, Brake Actuator, Engine, Tires.

Once those items sell, how will you get rid of your car?

Will salvage yards take them? What does anyone do with a gutted car?

You can probably pay someone to tow it away. You would need to check your area to see who can do it. But there are definitely more valuable parts on this car if everything is parted out. Common items people want are

    Steering wheel
    interiors
    MFD screen
    AC compressor
    Throttle Body
    Injectors

And it would be an eyesore if you don't have a garage to keep this car, neighbors would give you a dirty look. Might not be as bad if you don't sell the body parts and the car still looks intact.

Do you plan on parting it out still? Might be interested in things.

OP: I look at your central PA as location... you do know we are in the salt belt area? unless the car is keep and clean every season ( ask me, I know lot of pp still do ) ... all the metal, bracket, are fully rusted in ... it will NOT be fun to remove/recycle ... :)

I say check with your neighbors ... If you decide to part out, I think the gutted car will be seat for a -little- while.

Folks are in west coast are better luck, and a lot of recycle part can be re-used...

I have a 5 years old Camry in the baltimore MD, I can even rotate the wheels ... I have some choice words !!!
