I'm also making the assumption that your on unfamiliar roads out in the boondocks somewhere - that's why your at zero mile to empty and looking for a gas station. If your on familiar roads or in the city; you know you can easily get to a gas station; unless your simply hard-headed and want to risk the tow bill.
If you do run it dry; you'll need at least 3 gallons and a wrench to remove the battery connection. Sometimes the ECU will lock you out, so you'll have to do a manual reset to make the ECU forget how dumb you were. My understanding is that if you don't try to force the car to run on an empty tank; you should be able to just put 3 gallons in it and take-off. Repeated attempts to force the car to run, will result in ECU lock-out; requiring an OBD2 reader error code eraser or battery disconnect.

Hope this is what your looking for.

FWIW; the gen5 are only 10.6 gallon tanks, heavier, with a larger 2.0L engine - though the PHEV will do close to 40 miles on a charge, whereas mine will only do 25 miles. Force recharge with the ICE will only get you to 80% of a full charge so 32 or 20 miles respectively.

Does the DTE actually go to zero. On the 2016 Camry, the DTE would just say low fuel after hitting somewhere in the 50 to 70 miles range.

I'm not sure; That happened to me - but I'm pretty sure it was in my GMC. Coming back from a hunting trip in the mountains and someone in the group siphoned a few gallons out of my tank to run their generator. I was pretty PO when the informatics locked to low fuel and I missed the low tank beep. Luckily I was familiar with the area but 20 miles from the nearest gas station in a 17 mpg 4x4 SUV. It was mostly downhill, but I was sweating bullets. Bought a locking gas cap the next day.

I'm 90% sure my Prime just goes to zero, but this may be due to the EV mode option.

Never tested it, but I've heard Subaru DTEs will keep displaying miles down to zero.

EV mode DTE is on a separate screen option (gen4)
HV mode DTE swings wildly, looks to calculate mixed use guess-o-mate - but starts dropping fast after 30 minutes of ICE highway driving. People who rely on those numbers, obvious don't really watch them and take their readings as 'gospel'.
