I hit a pothole today and now one of the tires has a little bulge. I’m going to replace it with a new one. I have the Toyo Extensa A/S II A. I got the car in April of 2023 and the car has about 6.7k miles on it. Will it be okay to just replace the 1 tire? I measured the tire tread depth (see below) and seems like the rear passenger has barely any wear. Yep; put the new tire on the drivers side front - that's usually the one that wears the fastest. You may also want to skip a rotation; only rotate the passenger side. Leave it there for 10K miles, then continue the 5K miles rotations. That should pretty much even out all 4 tires. Hope this helps...
Most importantly, make sure that it is identical in brand and model to the original tires. Once the dealer installed the P-metric Toyo (A29) instead of the ISO-metric Toyo (A41) on my previously owned 2020 Prius Prime XLE. They corrected it when I saw it. My 2021 Prius Prime Limited has Dunlop tires.
My 19" toyo extensa rear tire just developed a sidewall bulge too (I never wanted those 19" tires but all the cars for sale had them in 2023). I have 15k miles on mine though - I am guessing I'll likely need 2? Its the rear passenger side. Think there's any chance for a prorated replacement (or a warantee one? I heard there was a recall on other Extensa sizes for sidewall issues)? I'm pretty annoyed especially if I am going to have to get 2 tires plus alignment. They never should have put these 19" tires on this car - the 17's should have been standard across the board.
You can just move that tire to the rear axle; it'll do the least amount of damage there. Whenever you get it serviced; just make sure that tire stays on the rear axle.
It looks like Toyota has two OEM 19” tires—Toyo Extensa A/S II and Michelin Primacy A/S—as well as a winter tire (Michelin X-Ice Snow). I would get the tire from the dealer, as it comes with a warranty. Bulge or nail, they will replace it immediately. 19” tire on the Toyota tire center For 17”, there are Toyo Extensa A/S II and Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus fuel-efficient OEM tires as well as the non-fuel-efficient, non-OEM Goodyear Assurance Maxlife 2, the latter of which I would avoid because of the lack of fuel efficiency. There is also the winter tire Michelin X-Ice Snow. 17” tire on the Toyota tire center
Thanks, I won't let them force me into 2 new tires then, and will skip rotating it then. Looking forward to ultimately getting rid of them tho- are the Michelins better?
Michelin OEM tires also claim excellent fuel efficiency (aka very low rolling resistance). Given that Michelin is a better brand than Toyo in general, yes, the Michelin OEMs are probably better than the Toyo OEMs. They are a lot more expensive though, but perhaps they last a lot longer as well.
Just to summarize the OP pics: front/right: 9 (32ths) (has bulge) Front/left: 9 Rear/right: 9 Rear/left: 10 (all numbers slightly less)
On a couple of side notes, I destroyed a tire on a pothole in my MINI. 195 55 16 Bridgestone Driveguard runflats. Not just a 'bubble', which is not good, but destroyed. Rim was okay. Runflats suck. In another observation, don't wider tires usually go hand in hand with low profile tires? Why even make a 19" wheel available, have to suffer with the weight, ride, and hazard compromises with a low profile tire if it's going to have the same 195 width as the 17" tire? Maybe a little better handling and mostly looks, I imagine.
