What is this part?

Yeah, my 2010 didn't come with an air compressor, not even of any kind, and I had tried the small portable kind before and been frustrated. Hence



with the capacity to air up tires easily, or operate small tools. (Or larger tools, with breaks to rebuild pressure.)

I wonder why they changed from the 2010 one-piece thing to this version with the separate carpeted piece over top. Could those little recesses in the top of this part be made to hold some kind of accessory thingies?

 

Same for the 2012+ v, which has a structural foam plank atop the battery area, without a PVC supporting structure.

 

Funny—what 2010 has is pretty much the carpeted plank with the supporting structure, just as a single part.

 

Right. The puzzling thing is that in 2010 the whole thing was just one piece, the structure was flat and carpeted on top, to make the whole rear area flat.

Then they changed to two pieces, a flat carpeted piece sitting on top of a separate structure piece, and I was wondering why they made that change.



I noticed your structure piece has some small recesses in the top, so I wondered if maybe in some markets or some trims there are small accessories to be stored there, covered by the flat carpeted piece.
