idk how new it is, but i think the disparity waxes and wanes over the generations.
certainly, hi tech has given many entrepreneurs have made billions, and ceo pay has gone crazy.
wall street is richer than ever, and american workers keep adding fuel by weekly paycheck investments into all sorts of funds.
add internet earnings and other things, and it's probably a recipe for disaster

The signs say snow tires or tire chains required after October 1st, but the roads were fine.

    Saved around $25-$50 CAD.

New mirror and mirror cover ordered from Toyotatown Parts Direct (London, ON) would have come to $385 CAD including tax and shipping.

Driving 800mi to Surrey, BC costs about $80 CAD(assuming 50mi/gal and $1.20/L fuel price in the Calgary area and $1.50/L to refuel in Surrey). Google says the sales tax rate in Surrey is 12%, so the $240 used part comes to almost $270 with tax. Together with the fuel cost, that puts a total cost of around $350 CAD and 10 hours of driving time.
(I'm assuming the 800mi is round trip and Paul lives somewhere on the east slope of the Rockies)

Now if the trip also included non-car related stuff, then that $80 worth of gas becomes shared with the other activities. But if those other activities resulted in a night or more in a hotel, then that's even more added costs unless he was able to stay with friends/family in the greater Vancouver area.

For comparison's sake, the same order would have cost someone in the US about $230USD($315CAD) if they waited until Black Friday, or $300USD/$420CAD if they just couldn't wait for the sale and had to order immediately.

I needed an excuse for a road trip. The fuel cost me about $150.

    Congratulations on being the victim.

Yeah, that darn older generation actually graduated high school, learned a trade, found a decent job with a decent company, learned more stuff, get promoted to other positions, got paid better every year, and live comfortably from that job. All my friends from the 1980s to present have decent jobs, with healthcare and 401ks. We have nice houses, decent cars, some for just commuting and some for family time. Vacations a few times a year for a week or so at a time and still have 2 weeks left over at the end of the year....everyone chooses their own path. You're only held back by yourself. If you think you can't do it, you're right. If you think you can do it, you're also right. It's all on you. The people I see that don't succeed are the ones that wouldn't succeed at anything because of themselves, not what someone else does. Moaning and groaning about what someone else has earned gets you nowhere. Focus on yourself and don't worry about what other people are doing or what they have. Be a good person and try to not be a nutcase, don't try to tell everyone else how they should live or what they should do with the money they earn, life is a bit more relaxing.

The province of Quebec requires snow tires from December 1 to March 15.

The dental hygienist told me yesterday that she had her snows put on in preparation for a weekend trip to Montreal. That's a little overly cautious, I'd say, for the East.

I've usually shot for December 1st, to changeover, but this car, I'm going to try to make it through the winter without snows (retired).

In original topic notes, I've managed to buy just the mirror caps, and/or heated glass, for my MINI's, when the main unit was still intact. Cheaper, but still not cheap. It was also an opportunity to replace them with a Union Jack design (a MINI thing).

From what I think I've seen on the Toyota site, even the high end Prius doesn't get power folding mirrors. True?

I don't like snow tires. They grip well on ice when it's a few degrees below freezing, but they seem to lose all traction in warmer conditions. I recall getting stuck in 2" of snow in someone's yard on level terrain.
I have much better luck with all-season tires, and I stopped putting on winter tires several years ago.

Then you don't want to know about studded tires, lol. Noisy as hell, but got me out of my slightly sloped driveway after an ice storm.

We used to get studs put in when I was a kid. They tended to wear out quite rapidly.
I don't think they are legal here anymore.

Ahh. Last year (or was it a couple years back), we went up to Williams Lake in early October. It was short notice, but I’d happened to put our snows on in late September (when you’re driving 3k kms a year it doesn’t much matter). So we were legit, anyway.

It was sunny and mild, shirt-sleeve weather the whole time.

still, I suppose that can change, and fast. Lots of massive, 4-door pickups up there, and electrical outlets for block heaters in the motel parking lot. Probably familiar to you as well.

I didn't see many outlets for block heaters there, but I wouldn't have had time to charge up anyway. I have been asked to unplug and get lost before. I got there in the morning, and left in the afternoon.

I allowed for a few days to wander around the Lower Mainland and enjoy the weather. But it wasn't that pleasant, so I departed for home yesterday.

Wait what, you drove to Surrey, from Alberta, for that mirror? Ok, whew…

regarding snow tire traction on bare pavement, I’ve found Michelin X-Ice very well mannered.

I have had others, in distant past, and know what you mean, spinning the wheels when trying to make a left in a short window.

Like I said, I wanted an excuse for a road trip that I was planning anyway.

I get your point; I'm an idiot for paying too much. You haven't even accounted for the hotel.

But I was wanting a road trip to the coast, and this was a good excuse.
