Originally set out just to get a replacement 4D69 transponder since I stupidly threw mine away a few years ago when I replaced the shell of one of my working smart keys. Almost left us stranded the other day when the battery in the fob died rather suddenly and the key would not work in the slot. Finally realized my mistake.

Trying to acquire a transponder locally in the US was going to be about $13 shipped but an all new fob compatible with silver key logo was only $28 on ebay.

Transponder registration with the immobilizer went through fine and the new key works in the slots proving it has transponder 4D69.

However, the SKS step keeps failing. Tried chicken dance and Techstream. In each case, when I'm at the last step of adding the new key itself, pressing the lock/unlock and then lock results in 4 door lock cycles indicating the ECU rejected the key. The fact that it did so proves that the buttons and transmitter in the aftermarket fob work but the ECU didn't like it. A successful pairing is met with 2 cycles of the door locks.

Anyone ever had this fail with a legitimate key? Techstream says I have 2 slots remaining to add keys. I'm assuming they either this key is just not compatible or that it was previously paired. Since it has 4D69, that proves it was at least intended for SKS since 4D67 is for non smart key systems.

I would remove the 4D69 RFID chip from the AM fob and put it in your existing fob, which is missing the RFID chip. Since you have successfully registered it already, it should just work, which would mean your existing fob should again be fully functional.

You could have max number of keys registered and will need to use Toyota Techstream to delete the old ones.

Also I lost SKS functionality in my lone original FOB in my Gen2 doing the chicken dance that never accepted the other FOB... The original FOB would still unlock the car when I touched the door handle, but I had to put the key in the slot to get the car to start and could no longer leave the key in my pocket.

Um, did you read my post? I specifically stated Techstream told me I had two remaining slots to add keys.

    2009 Gen 2 #6 (equivalent to #8 for 2007).

Was considering that but just ordered a 4D69 chip on aliexpress for $3.50 shipped so I'll probably just return this fob. If it worked, it would be worth keeping as a spare.

Does anyone know if you can deregister a single transponder without erasing all of them?

oh.. apologies... was reading too quickly... usually people talking about the chicken dance don't talk about Toyota Techstream.

So the seller is saying this sometimes happens and they're just sending me another fob free of charge. We'll see what happens. Since there are only 7 transponder slots, I'm not too keen to keep adding transponders. If the key shell comes apart easily, I'll probably just swap the shell and not add the transponder if I can get the SKS portion paired....although techstream says the transponder needs to be paired first during the SKS pairing. I don't see how that could really be a thing since neither the chicken dance or techstream method requires inserting the new key into the slot.

No, you can't, as far as I know. You delete all keys except for the one you are currently using in the slot, then add back the keys you have at hand. The maximum keys you can add on a Gen 2 is 5, not 7.
If that means they don't want the faulty one back, I would just do what I suggested in the post above, which I have quoted below.

As @ChapmanF pointed out once the main use of this feature is to delete old fobs in the system in order to resell the car and be certain the old owner still doesn't have access.

    5 smart key slots.
    7 transponder slots.

    They're not the same.
