Hayne's has there people, or someone, tear a car down and go through all repairs.
Or at least most of them, and made there own manual. And came up with there own manuals.

Anyone who buys any piece of equipment has the right to repair it if they choose.
You bought it, you own it.

But the manufacture is under no obligation to provide anyone with the information to do the repair.
They don't even have to provide the parts.

I certainly wish they would provide that information more easily.

It's a business, they want ALL the business. Nothing wrong with that.

Luckily, there is youtube! You can find just about any repair for almost anything!

 

I seem to remember that the drive electric motor spins at 10,000 RPM plus while driving at normal speeds. That tells me that there is some considerable gearing ratio between the wheels and the drive motor. Together with the fact that these motors use rare earth magnets, it seems highly implausible that neutral consists of just idling the gears. If the computer were not constantly monitoring torque to the wheels, it would not function as a neutral gear.

This is just common sense.

 

Because #42 is about Paul's understanding of neutral and not about Car Scanner Pro, I've responded to it in an appropriate existing thread.

That response is probably boring to anybody coming to this thread to discuss Car Scanner (except maybe for someone with a geeky interest in how those MG RPMs behave that you can see in the app).

 

This reasoning you bring is just based on current outdated business friendly concepts.

Reiterating #20, in the US, car manufacturers have put themselves under that obligation, by agreeing as a group to the terms of the Massachusetts right-to-repair law and agreeing to honor those terms throughout the US (for the not-completely-heartwarming reason that by agreeing to those terms they hoped to preempt better right-to-repair laws being proposed in other states).

The techinfo.toyota.com site for the US is how Toyota goes about meeting that obligation.

Whether there are any newer (Tesla, maybe?) or otherwise recalcitrant car manufacturers that stood apart from agreeing to those terms, I don't know.

 

So, this is the best scenario according to you for spreading knowledge on how to keeping good cars running?

Why not just make the ideal repair information from Toyota available for everyone for free?

What was the main argument against this..? Support dealerships only and make any independent mechanic or end-user fumble in the dark and use YouTube (which we all love, but they solve an issue that should perhaps not be allowed to exist at all, in my view).

 

But what they WANT should perhaps not be what they are ALLOWED to do? If this is your ideal, why have any consumer facing laws at alll? Everything is wrong with that.

 

$30 for two days access is not bad when you consider an one hour diagnostic at a dealer or pro independent is $150-$200. You can download hundreds or even thousands of pdfs but you are not getting the big books in one chunk that used to be available.

The difference is one hour of pro time might take days diy starting from scratch. It can take a big part of those two days for $30 just to learn the navigation of the Toyota Information System.

Meanwhile the Pro has done it so often there is no TIS learning curve much less an experience, tool, or resource limitation. Dealers also have factory tech support if needed..

Do YOU work for free???? They have spend thousands, maybe millions of dollars to make something,
or learn about how to make something and to fix it. WHY should they have to give there knowledge away
for free????

I didn't say anything about whether it's good or bad according to me. I just tried to clarify what the terms are that the manufacturers have agreed to in the US.

I'm not sure if you've been following news out of the US these past several years. You seem to be suggesting that regulations on corporate behavior to protect the public interest can be desirable at times. Proponents of that view can be found in the US, but at present have only opposition status in all three branches of the federal government and in many of the states. It does not seem like a propitious time for making much progress of the type you are proposing.

If you check the www.toyota-tech.eu site, you should find that the terms available to you already beat the terms available to us in the US.

 

This just SAD! to me. Read up on the right to repair concept. Is the car free? Y’all seem to love the idea to not know how to repair the vehicle. Even Apple had to adapt.

My focus as a consumer is not to increase revenue streams for any company. I payed good money once.

It is well known this kind of propaganda has worked well on some people. You know everyone’s opposed to this is a crazy EU socialist/communist.

What do you think of Apple being forced by regulation to inform the public how to repair iPhones?

 

It's frustrating, especially for those of us in the US. The current right-to-repair climate available to us is what Massachusetts was able to enact roughly a decade ago. And in the current reality here in the US, if there is any change in the right-to-repair picture in the next few years, the likeliest change is that it will be weakened or abolished.

If someone works hard to learn something, why should they be FORCED to give those skills

According to your thinking, you SHOULD be forced to go to the dealer to get your car worked on.

Apple didn't adapt, they were forced, there is a BIG difference. They should have stopped selling
their products in any country that tries to force them to do that.

And NO one is stopping you from repairing your car, LEARN on to do it. That is what everyone
has done.

This is what regulation is. Force companies to follow rules, apparently is not acceptable to you. It’s not my definition that this is socialism, it’s just logical consumer protection. Any concept of this is met with counter arguments that this is communism.

I am not obsessed with this definition at all, because in my home country companies are not allowed to dictate any rules, this is the governments duty and we elect those.

It’s just based on ideology and this is why EU and US are so different… I wonder why healthcare and medicines are so much more expensive for you, as another example….

Poor Apple! They need more trillions. (Also, how can anyone ”learn how to repair correctly” if they lack Toyotas instructions? It’s just hollow reasoning in my mind).

 

Toyota in the EU charges $29 US for one day access. In the US you get two days for $30.

In your case, it would be helpful to know what you need it for? There might be a silver bullet or Mendel may have appropriate links.

You are sort of catching on that the US has a two-party system that includes a "regulate companies for the benefit of consumers" party and a "regulate consumers for the benefit of companies" party. (There are other differences, but that's a prominent one.) You would not hear "counter arguments that this is communism" from the former party, but you do hear that incessantly from the latter.

There was a US election in 2024 that has given the latter party essentially unchecked control of all three branches of the US federal government. It also is the controlling party in many states. I'm not talking about what my preferred outcome or anybody else's preferred outcome would have been. I'm just saying what the situation is.

I am not saying that you should change your mind and stop thinking RTR laws could be further improved. I'm just trying to get you to understand why in the US, for at least the next few years, that is about as far as possible from likely to happen.

 

@ChapmanF I appreciate the feedback and understand. I have had a crazy/funny aunt in the US since my birth 1971 so I know some about the special and now very polarized culture.

This is not relevant in my mind with regard to the RTR concept - but I have had to stay clear of politics in any conversation with American colleagues (and on this forum now) since many years.

I am not really that sorry if I triggered anyone (@ASRDogman..), but my focus in only on the basic concept that the consumers should never be required to adapt to any artificial limitation in who can repair my purchased belongings with knowledge.

Information on how to repair should not be placed behind paywalls or dealership monopoly. It’s just not good capitalism. Let actors compete to repair with the same knowledge - and if a person wish to try themself to risk destroying the vehicle, it’s the most free market concept considerable.

Repair manuals is not an actual Intellectual Property as legally defined in that EU, this is my main insane focus to have these available easily for any vehicle. Not locked behind paywall that makes no sense other than create revenue for Toyota, and their dealerships. This is pure vendor lock-in/cartel, not capitalism.

My obsessed concept was more that I have been looking for gen3 / plug in Workshop manual for reference and actual reading (insanity again) since I purchased my plug in 2013, I found the gen2 much more easily.
