On my Camry, which is a Gen 5 hybrid, I did not get really decent mileage until about 1300 miles on the car, likely due to engine break in & ECU learning. Of course, much lower than my 2017 Prius Two.

No matter how badly you have it, there is always someone who has it worse. Look at this poor fellow:

    Prius (Toyota Prius) | Fuelly

On his 20th fill, he had travelled 153 miles and averaged 27.5mpg. He doesn't have any notes visible. Maybe he had a couch strapped to the roof and was at 110mph the whole time.

I did better than that at my worst with my 2025 Camry XLE with a heavier car and a little larger engine..

I got in that neighborhood a few times this winter. But that was mostly because of using remote start for 10min warmups plus leaving the car running during errands. We had long stretches this winter of well below zero(F) temps. I wonder if that owner was doing something that also caused them to regularly leave the car running while it was stationary. Or I could see something like a camping trip doing it if the car was used as a generator.

your post seems to have even less point than the initial post you are criticizing.

i was getting 6L/100km (39mpg) but it was on highway with winter tires and a roof rack with skis,
but my gen4 prime in the same conditions was not as bad as current gen5 :(

Almost 3k miles. Yesterday I drove 444 miles and averaged 59 MPG with an average speed of 60 MPH. The OP's problem is his trips are all very short. My last tank average was 58 MPH locally but I do not drive less than ten miles on any trip (round trip).

490.5 miles on 8.3 gallons of fuel on today's fill. This should be summer blend now so it might even go up a few MPG. Gas was $2.889 per Gallon. Up 24 cents in the last month.

Last tank 520 miles on 8 gallons, 4.4 cents a mile, 65 MPG, $2.73 per gallon. Just under 5k miles front tires barely showing any wear difference in all 6 tread grooves, compared to rear tires. I'll check the oil tomorrow. Bet it is still clean and full.

I am so glad to see this discussion, all the experiences, all the points of view. Trying to not be emotional about it... I have a 2017 prius Two, and also a 2024 Prius Prime. I love both cars, but the tech upgrades on the 2024 are awesome. That is the good part. The 2024 has been on 3 long open road trips. In the USA, Los Angeles to Kentucky and back, Los Angeles to New Mexico and back, Los Angeles to Seattle and back. My range on tank maximum had never been above 404. I carefully calculate mileage over all and on each leg. Using I40 you can cruise a whole tank with no interruptions . It seems my best is about 43. And although I do not hypermile, I am reasonable, my 2017 has never disappointed with 55mpg pretty consistently. I expected more out of the 2024. I do not talk much about the 2015 that I had but even the 2015 did better with 48 than the 2024. Toyota had said that their goal in engineering was to improve gas mileage 5 percent with each generation. I have seriously considered swapping out the 2024 Prime for a standard Prius, or getting a Camry as they advertise 600 mile range per tank, and I cannot seem to get above 404. Oh, I also do a Los Angeles to Las Vegas a few times, and still on open road, cruising carefully, cannot get above 50mpg. Car has about 20,000 on it now. It sounds like all of you, all, are getting better mileage than me. So that is good to know, although I cannot figure what things are under my control to improve this cars mileage.
    Thanks all.

I'm not sure I would do any better at a constant 75 to 80mph. Mine isn't a Prime, but at those speeds the periods during which the engine turns off are brief, so it's essentially a ton and a half car running a gasoline engine. Viewed through that lens, high 40s is pretty good. I borrowed a stripper Corolla for an all highway trip a couple of years ago and barely broke 40mpg.

I'm impressed by the degree to which the 19 inch wheels and tires and 17 inch wheels and tires Toyota uses influence efficiency.

The 2024 is a larger, heavier, and less emphasis on aerodynamics car. It's also equipped with a 2.0L engine, larger than the 1.8L or 1.5L engines of the previous generations. In addition it's a Prime with a 40 mile range battery pack - makes it heavier than a standard Prius. The Prius will always get lower mpg on straight highway driving; it's power-train is optimized for city driving averaging below 45 mph. So if your blasting down the highway above 70 mph; expect to take a mpg hit. Nobody in LA drives slower than 75-80 mph on the highway; otherwise you'll get run-over like road kill.
See what happens if you keep it below 68 mph on the highways for a tank. That seems to be the sweet spot before mpg starts jumping off a cliff.Use the cruise control so you don't cheat or get pedal creep because everyone is passing you. I'm used to that coming from a gutless Prius C and CIVIC HB and usually traveling in the right lane.
I've spent a few years in So. Cal and those "drivers" are aggressive. It was like a full contact sport. I was driving an old rust bucket at the time, so finding really "nice" cars to let me in was a breeze. They were afraid the rust and dents would be contagious; and they were correct, if they didn't let me in.o_O:eek::whistle:

    Hope this helps....

FWIW; 45-48 mpg traveling 75+mph is still a lot better than most cars on the road.....
