The passenger-side rear seatbelt will not retract. It is pulled all the way out and has zero retraction. I removed the trim panel to expose the tensioner behind the headrest. I was then able to carefully wind the belt all the way back in hoping that it would then reset. Unfortunately it didn't do anything. Upon slowly pulling the belt out a little bit it still did not have any tension and does not rewind even an inch. The Prius is a 2014 and I have owned it since 2017. I don't think it was ever in an accident and the seat belt is not filthy dirty. It was working fine until one of my daughter's friends pulled it all the way out saying it would not go back in(retract). Does any one know how to repair this? Is there a tab I need to push or does it have to be completely replaced?

    Thank you

The return-spring and possibly locking mechanism is broken. replace it with a junk yard or new unit.

Offhand, I would guess not. It isn't built to come loose like that, so it seems the most likely explanation is that something broke, rather than slipping off in some kind of reversible and rewindable way.

But yours may be the first post ever about such a thing happening, so there might not be a lot of PriusChat experience to bring to bear on your question.

I don't think so; it's like a garage door spring. More than likely the end tab of the spring broke off. You can probably take it apart and bend a new end-tab, but I'd probably look at cost and availability of replacement first, to see if your wasting your time and effort.

Have you ever taken one out? I just called a junk yard and they wanted $50 for one that they would pull from a wrecked car. A rebuild service charges $80.

IMHO; my time is worth more than $50. If it's the right color and in good shape, I'd probably go for the junk yard unit. that belt should only be bolted down at one or two points - so quick and easy.
You can tinker with the old one when you have time to kill.:D:whistle: and you'll probably find some use for that belt.

Thank you. I was just concerned that a used one at a junk yard has been in an accident . There are comments online about post crash or non crash tensioners. Does that matter?

I'm not sure the rear belts have tensioners. You'd know if it does; there'd be a yellow electrical connector on it.

I think some retractors have tension-limiters also, which twist irreversibly in a hard-enough crash. I don't remember for sure, but there might be a label or mark on the belt at the point where it's supposed to stop pulling out before the limiter has twisted, so if it can be pulled out farther than that, it shouldn't be reused.

So I made another attempt at winding it carefully and was able to get it to wind up and stay wound up. However now it wont unwind at all and is locked.

I'm not surprised. The front retractors include tensioners: small bombs that are detonated by an electric current on the yellow connector, and pull you back hard in the seat.

Unless I'm wrong, the rear belt retractors just plain don't have that.
