Is there a world in which a mechanic changes your front drivers-side strut and the end result looks like this?

If you got a photo of it looking exactly like that before you brought it in it'd be easy... But I suspect its more complicated than that. How long ago was the work done and what did the mechanic say when you showed him the photo?

This is what it looked like before I brought the car in. I don’t have a photo from before, unfortunately. Got the work done about a month ago. Noticed while rotating the tires yesterday that the old messed-up dust boot was still there. I guess what I’m asking is whether a decent mechanic would change the strut without replacing that dust boot.

My reason for taking the car in was a creaking noise that seemed to come from the front drivers side suspension. Mechanic said it was the struts and sway bar links, but the noise didn’t go away. I wonder if it’s coming from the bearing mount.
