Dealers should tell new owners about this little quirk. It would save some owner anxiety. When I talked to the service department the tech told me several Prius owners have come in and inquired about the fuel gauge.

They didn't think to say anything cause it is far from a new quirk that a car's fuel gauge stays at fuel for a bit. Seen it in all my cars, full efficient cars like hybrids just make it more obvious.

^ Yep, if your used to driving large 20 mpg cars - you'd notice the fuel gauge not moving.
Whenever I jump into my 4x4, it seems like I'm hitting every gas station in-route. "Why are you empty again; we've only gone 300 miles!" Needless to say; I only drive it when I need to. FWIW; that 4x4 gets 17 mpg on a good day.:(

Thanks for the reply….I had a 2016 Prius for almost 10 years and never noticed that. Maybe because I never filled the tank to the top….

Without reading this thread, it would be really helpful when asking this type of question what year/ trim the car is. We assume it's 5th gen but is it the base model FWD or the Limited AWD or a Prime? Things matter.

My suggestion would be to drive at least what you calculate a half a tank should be, then fill it up. It should take roughly half the capacity or less to fill back up. Of course by this time you should have already seen the gauge drop.

My limited AWD seems very linear, but the first 1/4 tank takes about 120 miles to register as 3/4 tank but my fill up always are about 2 gallons short of capacity meaning I have 120 plus range even when its saying bone dry. Gotta love the Gen 5!
