I would like to share my experience with valvoline RP. So far what i can find from carfax, it didn't had good oil change history. I started with name brand synthetics and found that i had to add like 1/4qt every 1k miles or so. Always filled to 1/2 mark in the dipstick and it goes down to 1/4 in dipstick.

I tried AutoRX and during its cleaning phase(first oil change after using AutoRX), tried Valvoline RP. Changed the oil after 3k miles. Oil level was at 1/4 mark and didn't had to add oil in between. Not sure what helped. AutoRX or Valvoline RP. It is still consuming oil, but seems reduced. 1/4qt per 3k miles. Only after 3-4 oil changes, i can say it for sure.

I know the color of the oil can't determine the condition, but the oil came out was black and previous oil changes were not this dark. Never send for oil analysis.

The oil color is telling you that it's removing carbon deposits, but the only way to be sure is an oil analysis.

This isn't going to fix any mechanical damage that has already occurred. (ie. piston wall scoring, bearing wear) The best you can hope for is loosening those low tension rings; but if the oil leak is coming from hardened valve seals - it isn't going to do anything for that. There's also the question of how long the CAT will last with that amount of oil consumption.

    Good Luck.....

So you fill your car of oil halfway up the hatch marks on the dipstick that's full ? Not top of hat h marks ? Interesting .

yes.. only up to half mark in the dipstick.Somehow i was thinking that it will expand when heats up. May be i should fill it to the top.

The CAT, i need to replace. Random P0420 now. I am hoping that it will loosen up the low tension rings. I am waiting to replace it after 3 more oil changes.

if you add the recommended amount of oil, where does it end up on the dip stick?

all the best with the RP!

i didn't measured it. Just filled it until it reached middle from 5qt jug. Start car, the oil filter took some, then again filled it up to middle.

Trying to keep it for 4 more years. My son is driving it.

I'm going to state categorically that there are no production vehicles where filling to the "max" line on the dipstick at room temperature causes problems when the oil heats up. If it did, they would put the "max" line lower. Maybe some model had a problem with this, at some point in time, but the manufacturer would have just changed dipsticks if they discovered that issue, so the odds of one of us encountering this are essentially nil.

The oil will expand when hot, but not by enough to matter. Oil is something like 6% larger volume at operating temperature than room temperature. Capacity is very close to 4 qts, so around a quarter of a quart higher when hot. When the car is running a lot of oil is pumped/splashed around the inside of the motor, where it is supposed to be, and even if the car was stopped and it all drained down into the pan that little bit of extra volume wouldn't raise the oil level in the pan high enough for the crankshaft to be sitting in the oil.

Most people just fill to the top line when the vehicle is cold, on any car. It won't cause any problems and makes it easier to track usage. I wouldn't check the oil level on a hot car though. It is OK if the purpose is just to make sure there is still some in there (as on a long trip on a car that burns oil in an unpredictable manner), but that extra 1/4 quart is a significant fraction of the the Min to Max volume, so "how full is it" should always be done at approximately the same temperature.

As an aside, my son's F350 diesel holds 15 quarts of oil. That is around 0.8 qt of extra volume when heated up. Still not a problem.

of course, there's nothing wrong with half way. you just have to keep a closer eye on it if it burns oil.

Generally a conscious owner won't run it down to where it blows up the motor you know every 12 days it looks like it's about 2 quarts low almost. So every 9 to 12 days you're adding about 1.8 quarts to bring it to the full mark got two here just like it . They'll never blow up . Just wear more until it's so smokey you get out but it's not blown.

we have a conscientious op i think, but there are more unconscious owners than conscientious
