Why would Toyota discontinue support in the app for 2017 to 2019 Prius Primes? It worked for years. The remote start & climate control was there. The cars haven’t changed. Only the app did. The cars have the reputation for lasting for decades. Not supporting them now makes no sense. Perhaps they could work with Apple & Google on their smartphone apps.
Has this been confirmed by lots of people yet? As I often say Toyota sucks at software and I bet their cost overuns on keeping stuff running are huge. If true, this would be a great opportunity for a 3rd party app maker.
My understanding is 2017-2019 used 3G modems for the connection. Since the FCC basically got rid of 3G to make more room for other things 3G is officially obsolete and cant/wont work anymore. Thus Toyota had to make a choice, TSB/Recall all the cars to "upgrade" them to 4G or simply disable the functionality in the app. There was no choice, they went with the cheaper option. To quote Ryan in Hunt for red October, "Well that was a guess, but it seemed logical."
@Mike Pickus , what are the features supported by Toyota? We might be able to reverse engineer via OBD2 and see if the features are available there. A good first step
The modem in the 2017 is 4G. We sorted this out a few years ago when the cellular providers started turning off 3G. And the telematics in the 2017 continued to work fine. About the only thing that still works is the odometer and the charge history.
App stopped working for my 2022 Prius Prime a few months ago. I started a case with their online support team and have basically been told that it is a problem they know about and are working on. My subscription ended a few weeks ago, so I didn't re-up. It looked like the new update on the app would allow for remote lock/unlock, which is nice if you have that unsure suspicion that you forgot to lock the doors or the kids need to grab something. Nothing really to add other than my frustration with a 3 year old car with less than 50k miles that no longer does the cool little tricks I want it to and paid for. Hopefully they fix it.
I have the same issue: The Remote Connect capabilities on my 2022 Prius Prime also went AWOL a few months ago, but that was about the same timeframe that I renewed what I thought would be Remote Connect, and the remote climate (important on sunny hot days with a black exterior and interior car) stopped working. I have a ticket open too, and added a screen shot from my smartphone app showing that I had Remote Connect as an active subscription. That garnered a "we're working on it" response, but nothing more. I also noticed the change in the app's user interface to add the remote lock/unlock, but I'm skeptical if that will ever work. When it was working, the app could display a top view of the car with no info. From our Lexus vehicle, this should show the tire air pressures, but the Toyota side never did. So the Toyota/Lexus app has some "vaporware" features.
