Holidays have me thinking about family. Just recalled around 1990 flying into Southern California to help out an aunt in her 90s, including a trip to DMV for her ID card. The office seriously had a line out the door, and a wait time of a few hours. Very taxing. Anyway. People were crowded around standup tables, taking written driving exams. In more than a few cases, one or two other people seemed to be helping the test-taker. Testing by committee, I guess.
That's how it was done; the busier the better - besides they ran out of the Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese written exams. I'm definitely NOT speaking from experience, because they didn't grade on a curve, like my math class back then. Sorry that bridge came down, but 1 out of three isn't bad odds. And I left my glasses at home; so could you help a veteran out.....
Good catch - I was thinking about the 50-state FAA Part 108 license instead of the FCC Part 97 Lots of Federal regulations and licenses to keep up with 'eh? For those coastal elitists who think that one federal drivers license would solve problems instead of creating MORE of them I invite you to consider a world where the test were to be developed in.....say Little Rock.....or Montgomery. I ASSURE YOU, that most people in flyover country would have the same reaction if the test were developed in Sacramento or Bastan. Having visited every US state and driven in 51 out of 52 of them (plus a few territories) I can assure you that there are more than enough poor drivers in each one of them. Hard pass!!
I figure a natl. DL would be a major boondoggle. Not because it is not somwhat practical it just seems as if it would add another layer of bureaucracy and that is never good.
