The heater keeps the temperature of the battery from falling below about +5°C, to avoid it having restricted output when you start driving, so there's less chance of the car deciding to start the engine. The cooler cools down a hot battery before charging, to reduce wear on the battery - better to charge when not excessively hot. You might want to disable the options to avoid the extra power use - tell the car to only use power for actual charging.
Pros: Battery heater and cooler can both work while driving too, if the battery gets too cold or too warm, for whatever reason(s) ! Cons: Being able to find the settings in the menus can be tricky, since they are typically not used to often.
The settings don't affect driving - the heater's not used, air conditioning is controlled normally in G4, and cooling happens regardless in G5.
