Is anyone else having this issue? Compass screen doesn’t seem to be reliable. Anyone know what would be the cause of this? I tried to look in the manual and the only mention of the compass is on page 95 and does not really say anything else about it.
Last month, it did go out on me and then come back. I was traveling in rural and mountainous areas with spotty cell phone reception. Except for short intervals, I was not in deep canyons where GPS might be iffy. It would be nice to see the prerequisites for the compass to work.
After more than almost 3 years with this car, I can safely say the compass is completely useless. It is blank for me at least 80-90 percent of the time.
According to the manual, the compass is linked to the Navigation system. I don't have a subscription to Toyota's Navigation system but I've seen the compass appear when I have Android Auto connected. I assume it also appears when Apple CarPlay is connected. I don't think it'll appear if none of those services are connected.
I don’t have Toyota nav either. CarPlay. Will try driving around with phone location off and see what happens.
Turned off phone. Took 20 minute drive. Compass worked perfectly. I suspect telematics, ie, DCM. May try disconnecting dcm fuse. edit: Or perhaps it just uses the gps in the head unit. Who knows?
I don’t have Toyota navigation system subscription either but I’m always connected to CarPlay. The compass just only work sometimes.
Same. I did not connect the phone on my drive this morning and the compass worked perfectly fine (without Toyota Nav as well). So, the compass doesn't need Toyota Nav, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to work. I guess you have a problem, @theRob.
I finally figured it out. I use Waze all the time in CarPlay and I noticed today if I start navigating on Waze the compass goes blank on the MID. Then once hit stop in Waze the compass come back on the MID instantly. I honestly never put the 2 and 2 together. I thought the compass on the MID was its own thing separate from the infotainment system. Kinda wish it was. Also would be nice that instead of the compass going blank on the MID, it would show some indication on the screen that it is being used by infotainment system. So I guess every time “it was not working” was simply because I was navigating on Waze.
I misunderstood this thread being about the real compass screen on the multimedia display in the in-car navigation system (a view alternative to using the map), so I didn't look at it earlier. The "compass screen" on the MID isn't a compass screen - it's a navigation-linked display. So it is separate from the "infotainment" system - it is driven by whatever is providing navigation, as a secondary display. When you see a compass on it, it's because the in-car navigation is selected, and it chooses to show that when it doesn't have any turn or other information to show - so all the time when not navigating, I think. If you want to use this "Waze", I would hope the car lets it ask for a compass on the display like the in-car system does, or would let it draw one itself. Have you checked to see if Waze has any options for what to show on secondary displays? Actually, is Waze managing to use the MID display at all for route info, or is it always blank?
I waived any kind of Toyota Connect when I bought the car, so no subscribed navigation system. As I said earlier, the compass on the MID works even with the phone turned off. Unlike the original poster, I barely ever look at the compass, lol. What I do notice is that when I am using Apple Maps through CarPlay, I will get a pop-up on the MID showing when my next turn is. I like that-I can turn off the multimedia display, which I do a lot. To get rid of the direction pop-up, you have to push the return (?) button on the steering wheel. Perhaps if I had the compass displayed on the MID, instead of what's playing on the radio, or economy stats, or whatever, I'd see the same behavior as well, as far as the compass goes. Maybe there is a way to suppress the direction pop-up on the MID, but as I said, I like it. With the phone off, the compass is probably getting gps info from the head unit. Of course, it makes you wonder what else gets that info, lol. EDIT: On a side note, I just discovered Voice Control. That, along with SIRI, is a subject more suitable for the Pancakes section.
