Hello all, My 2013 Prius with 227,000 miles has the brake hydraulic pump activating every 5 seconds. No codes presently. Options: 1) spend over $2000 for new pump and brake assembly, approximately $800 and $1600 at the local dealer. 2) Buy a diagnostic unit that can program and bleed the new unit. Recommendations for this tool please. Any one rebuild these units? Thank you in advance!
Thankfully you can still drive it while you plan your poison. You can get a generic ODB scanner tool from Amazon that will work to bleed your system. It is likely not to help much as air contamination symptoms show up differently than the every 5 second cycling that you are describing. Regardless a good ODB tool can offer peace of mind. Make sure to get one that doesnt require a monthly subscription. Back to the issue at hand. $2k for a Toyota to perform full replacement is actually cheaper than I have ever heard. If you mean for the procurement of the parts, $2k is actually more expensive than most. Make sure to check pricing online (toyota.com/your local dealer) vs walking in to your local dealer as the prices are completely different and usually cheaper online but will still be sent to the parts counter. Last thing is be sure to cross reference the data base to make sure you get the proper set of parts the 1st time. I made the mistake of procuring the wrong parts twice!
Whatever you do, do not try to save two bucks by buying used salvaged parts. Many Toyota dealerships will sell parts at significant discount online. Your local dealer most likely won't. The last time I checked when the 25% discount was on, the total for both parts was under $800 with free shipping. Autoparts.Toyota.com runs the 25% sale from time to time. If you can't handle the installation yourself, try to find a local hybrid mechanic who is well versed in this job. Their labor will be significantly cheaper than the dealer. Also, for applications like this, Techstream is best.
Consider getting a diagnostic and repair quote from dealership? googling this: cost to have brake booster components on a 3rd gen prius replaced by dealership The AI summary is interesting.
Thank you all! The $2000+ I mentioned, was for both parts only. I plan on doing this myself. Here's the plan spend the $800 on the pump/accumulator. Install. Hopefully I will not need to execute the next step of purchasing the $1600 brake cylinder assembly part# 47050.
Unless you like to do a LOT of work, it is BEST to do both at the same time. You should do a diagnoses and figure out where the leak is coming from. You can use a stethoscope to listen for the leak.
@poway $1222 with free shipping for both parts. You are being robbed blind by wherever you are getting your parts from.
It would help to know where that screen grab is from. Also, you can post images directly here, avoids the multiple hurdles Imgur imposes.
