Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of a problem figuring out what's wrong. I just finished a head gasket job on my 17 Prime and all seemed good until I noticed a pretty profuse oil leak after idling for a little. Before I could shut the car off it died. After doing some inspecting I noticed I did not put the second nut on the timing chain tensioner. After putting it on and turning the engine by hand to make sure I didn't fall out of time and smack a valve I gave it another go and thankfully stopped leaking a ton of oil. It idles smoothly until it suddenly dies. Normally when the engine shuts off it turns off pretty gracefully but this time it just came to a halt. I go into the car and notice it threw an CEL. I have attached the DTC and freeze frame. Also here is a video of what happens. It seems to die once the engine has warmed up, because when the rpms begin to ram down from a cold start, that's when it dies. I tried to link a yt video of the idle but since my account is too new I can't share it unfortunately. I will share it once it allows me. I'm at a loss for where to beging to diagnose this issue since there doesn't seem to be any useful DTC's. I was thinking maybe something is up with the VVT or maybe a sensor I forgot to plug in, but there's no codes! Thank you all in advance for your help.
I am puzzled by your remarks. A loose timing chain tensioner MIGHT cause a valve to smack into a piston but not cause an oil leak. Where is/was the oil leaking? if the head gasket was not installed properly, that is where I would expect a leak. Just my thinking.
OK, I'm bummed. How many miles were on this Gen 4 engine before a Head Gasket replacement was called for? What were the symptoms? Same as the chronic Gen 3 failures? Kudos for DIY yourself!
The short-term fuel trim is showing 19.53%. Look for a disconnected vacuum hose or leaking vacuum hose. A similar thing happened in this thread, https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3587673 A vacuum hose was not connected and the engine would not start
