BTW, these are Gen5 FWD HEV cars. Mine is an LE, with the 17" wheels. @HamiltonPrius 's is an XLE with the fancy 19" wheels. :)
    No plug in-ing involved...at all. :)

I account for plugging in, of course. You can obtain up to ∞ mpg otherwise.

Lately, the weather has been cold and humid, and I haven’t been hypermiling much, so the mpg has dropped to around 65 or even the low 60s.

Color me skeptical. "Account For": in what way? Do you not plug in the vehicle at all and only run in HV mode? That would be the only way to "account for" electrical use.

Even with putting the PHEV models in HV mode, the system could be slowly draining the grid charge. Bumping up the gasoline fuel economy.

Interesting. Other 5th gen owners have posted that displayed and calculated were in lockstep, a refreshing change from earlier gens. Can just imagine overhearing the Toyota boardroom conversation: "Oh God, can't believe we FORGOT to program in the mpg BS factor. Get on that right away!"

With my gen 3 I've been tracking mpg (well liters/100 km) almost since day one, and the exaggeration factor is around 7%, in favour of the house of course...

You should be a salesman. :p

Seriously, our '10 has about 65k miles, self-maintained, rust-free, garage-stored, likely our last car. Barring collision, deer, that sort of thing.

58 mpgs is very, very good. Driving a hybrid isn't the same as an ICE-only vehicle, for sure. I can get 65 mpg in both my 21 Prius and my wife's 24 Corolla hybrid by using the "pulse and glide" technique.

But I just do that for fun...normally drive it like I stole it but, still, average about 45-50.

BUT, you don't want to always baby it....almost every mechanic I know says it's good to do an Italian tuneup on ICE engines at least once a month....gotta blow out all the carbon build-up in there....even in a Toyota. (GDI engines, like in Hyundais, need multiple blow-outs a months.)

Do you fill your car up until the auto shutoff shuts off and that’s it?

My “technique” is fill up until the auto shutoff shuts off then add a couple more shots.

Next fill up I’m going see how much gas I can get in from the auto shutoff to gas running out of the filler tube

I subtract 0.33 miles from the HEV miles for every BEV SOC used. For example, if the SOC dropped by 3%, I subtract 1 mile from the HEV miles. (0.33 miles per corresponds to a 33-mile range, and the EPA estimate is 25 miles.)

I also subtract 5 mpg to account for an oddity in the car’s mpg calculator.

I then verify it using gas receipts and watt–hour readings.

After the corrections I make (verified by the gas receipts), I get around 70 mpg and higher in dry air if I hypermile, which means driving gently and keeping the displayed speed at around 57 mph (55 mph actual speed) on the highway.

The Gen 4 Prius Prime is the most fuel-efficient vehicle, with about the same fuel efficiency as the Gen 5 Prius HEV LE and the Gen 4 Prius Eco.

I give it one shot after auto shutoff, consistently.
Probably not a good idea to fill it to overflowing, or nearly so. :) . The fancy gasoline odor suppression system, or whatever it's called, probably wouldn't like it.

    You're right.

I did push the pedal down somewhat the other day. Not to 'Italian Tuneup" levels though. The sound, with the CVT (or does the Atkinson cycle come into play as well)...wasn't satisfying, lol.

At some point, I'm sure, the novelty will wear off, but for now I'm living in the slow lane. :)

edit: Also, I think you said that shifting to N was awkward for you. On my '26, I find it quite natural. The car seems to coast really well with little resistance. Shifting back to D is seamless. To be used judiciously, of course. :)

The odor suppression system is an emission control.

Check the manual for fill up recommendations. Ford says to second turn off, and that's what I've done, but Subaru wants you to stop at the first click.

    One man's odor is another's emission. :)

....That's what I said, with my Gen 3......then on my 80th birthday, I said that again when I bought a new Gen 4 .....& now, you guessed it, at 88yrs old, I bought a new Gen 5......this will likely be my last new car .....;)

I love it! All the West Coast people on here, with ancient Prius-es! We dwellers in the salt belt have to buy a replacement car every once in a while. When I lived near Syracuse, they had a "Winter Rat Parade"-cars used in the winter. I don't remember the details-it was many years ago, lol.

@Mendel Leisk hardly drives apart from going to the grocery store, I believe, and he is not feeling the need for a safe, modern car.

In ten years, it will all be SAE Level 4 self-driving, and even Gen 5 will be totally obsolete. They will especially be handy if you are over 90 years old. So, don’t be surprised if the Gen 5 isn’t your last car. LOL
