Rolled over 18K, close to 19, really. Next dealer visit will be 20K; so need to wedge in another oil / filter chg...

You may say, what for? Isn't that two extra oil chg @ $70+ each?

Welp, because it's Hawai'i, genius -- humidity here doesn't come in 'monsoon season' like the Southwest -- but exists year-round close to 90%. Plus doesn't freeze here, so in exchange for not seeing snow or even below 60 very often at sea level (unless I drive an hour to it at 10,029ft -- and only in winter)... we have to deal with moisture ingested into the crankcase -- and a lot of it.

When it's humid, the air gulped in for your ICE to mix fuel with, carries this moisture in -- and during combustion, is heated past sublimation to steam, some which goes past the ever-lighter-tension compression and oil rings on your pistons. Multiply by two (four cylinders every 720º) and by rpm (how many combustion cycles), and that's a lot of steam in your crankcase, which as long as the oil's above 212F there, stays a gas and exits thru EGR and PCV to be processed and recycled.

But when you have a HEV... that oil never gets to this temperature very often... so steam immediately condenses back into a liquid, which of course will cover the bottom of your oil pan, lifting up and sitting under the oil. This is a problem, because the pickup's there. So the pickup will suck in a lot of water, if the oil isn't changed often -- defo more often than an ICE-only vehicle. Changing your oil often (water buildup leaving with it) eliminates this risk.

    ---

Mostly (predictably) mulling and mumbling these days about crash repair

Just to keep this informative for readers... the incident was fast enough to bash the door skin in enough to bork window lowering (only 3" now) but did not break the window nor completely f*** the window lift mechanism... also still latches properly, if needing a shove -- which I'll take, but holy crap, lady :cautious:

Beware of lifted trucks, 5G owners -- even rolling back reversing, a 4K-lb pickup's defo heavy enough to peel the back edge of your door up and off the body, seal and all. I now have a plastic produce bag w/ a microfibre towel in it, tied and stuffed in the gaping air brake, to keep rain out. Not sure what doors felt like in 2G - 4G... but these skins are pretty thin. Intrusion bar is low too, so lifted truck bumpers esp those aftermarket 5/16" welded ones from Barnes or similar, will carve a nice 5"-deep pit, if you're lucky.

Leave NYE parties early -- leave the dishes to younger people, and dig out before tipsy potential-criminals and their lack of responsibility lay waste née $5K damage (if the unibody / suspension isn't bent) to your copy of easily one of the best cars I've ever owned. :(

Sorry to hear that. Drivers have been getting worse and worse since the pandemic. It is accidents galore out there with the insurance premiums off the roof. At least, you were safe.
