XM Radio

Take a look at https://www.metrotpn.com/documents/PDF%20Fi...sXMradio3.2.pdf to see one way to install an XM radio. Basically you open one part of the dash and plug into the back of the radio. The XM part is anywhere inside, but in this case it's in the trunk area.

 

I believe it still plugs in the back of the radio. I've been hearing, though, that the new method is putting the antenna on the dash, so the XM part would fit in a different location.

 

I just purchased the xm radio from the dealership when I bought my 07 about 3 weeks ago. They installed it and I ended up taking it out not liking the line up of xm and switched back to Sirius.

However, they mount the unit under the rear passenger side seat. You pull the seat bottom cushion out and there is a plate that unscrews and they mount the unit to the underside of the plate with brackets.

The dealer gave me the full instructions of how to mount the unit since I asked to move the antenna from the window to the roof. Its really quite simple to place it at that location with the right tools, brackets from toyota.

the Radio worked so-so on the dash, it still had a decent amount of fuzziness-static at some points due to the location. It didn't look to bad, however I didn't have the plate to mount it on, so I just had it stuck there with a little bit of sticky tape.

The dealer provided me with a new antenna and I placed that on the roof, it improved the signal a great deal in my opinion and do not lose the signal near as much. I may be partial since my 4runner has an antenna on the roof, so I was comparing my signal to that vehicle.

When the dealership gave me a new antenna, the claimed it was an external one, however it looked identical to the previous one! And it seems to be fine on the roof with just the magnetic aspect and no ground plate. If you want any pictures of the radio in the car under the seat or of the roof with antenna let me know, i have some on my digital camera.

I put my XM antenna behind the regular antenna. Others have mounted theirs inside the spoiler and some have put it inside the sharkfin antenna (if they installed one).

ps. I think someone on the thread above suggested routing it through the rear tail light or something.... I have never tried it, in my opinion the way I did it was the easiest way...but to each their own

 

my antenna on the roof looks just like the guy who posted it above my reply, so I have included the other photos of the piece you can remove under the back seat and also how I ran my wires down around the hatch.

I ordered the kit from factory interactive http://www.factoryinteractive.com/PriusXM/ . It was quite easy, took me 3 hours. The kit comes with a 'how-to' DVD and the radio shipped is a Toyota factory radio with a slim (very slim) antenna that you can mount right behind the esittimg am/fm antenna on the roof. I'm tech savvy, but not the kind of guy who could build a ship in a bottle or do detailed finish work. Luckily, the Priusm pretty much snaps apart, so install was easy.

Note that the DVD discusses how to best install a bigger, older antenna. When I called John to get advice on the smaller antenna, he had great info on how and where to install it. He also had advice on how to get to the connecter behind the radio without unsnapping the whole dash... saved me an hour of install work.

Other than seeing a tiny 2"x2" antenna on the roof, you'd never know the installation was there. And reception is great for both satellite and terrestrial with this antenna placement.
