This is a great forum and I have learned a lot from it. I live in the SF Bay Area and will be facing a new and longer commute. I am looking at getting a used (CPO) prius with HOV stickers....esp now since all the stickers are gone :( I am hoping someone can shed some light on purchasing a used Prius from a dealership, not private party.

    1) If the used car had HOV stickers, is it transferable? The dealership is saying "no". Would the dealer transfer the title from the original owner to them (toyota dealership), and then from the toyota dealership to me...thus making the transferability void?
    2) If is is transferable, what and where should I look for?

    Thank a bunch!

The stickers stay with the car. However, you won't have the "Clean Air Decal Certificate" that normally comes with the stickers. You'll need to fill out the form for "replacement" stickers, include the $8.00, and you'll get the certificate (in your name) with another set of stickers. If you've seen the car, I would jot down the serial number of the existing stickers (you'll need it) in case the dealer decides to remove them. Good luck!

Thanks for the information! Stupid question...Where do I find the serial number for the existing stickers. The dealership said they remove them but I've seen some Prius's with them. Thanks!!!

If the car had HOV stickers wouldn't the VIN number be on file with the DMV? Couldn't you apply for replacements using the VIN number and just say you don't know or don't remember the sticker number? They'll look it up and either replace them or tell you the car never had them. It's worth a shot.

I think it would be stupid for a dealer to remove the stickers. Those are a valuable add on to the car.
