FYI. In Fresh Air mode, what goes in must go out.

Setting your car in Fresh Air Mode (not recycled) will allow fresh air into the cabin and all that same air out through the hybrid fan system and channel all that air out through the hybrid battery modules to cool them down without using the hybrid fan system. How do you know if this is working? Have someone from inside the car turn the cabin fan on at full blast and in Fresh Air mode with all windows closed. Then go to the rear bumper passenger side (since that is where the hybrid battery air exhaust is located). Place your hand under the bumper and if you feel a blast of air coming out from under the bumper then your Fresh Air mode is actively cooling your hybrid battery modules without even running the hybrid fan system. This is all using cabin air fan system. All that air that goes into the cabin must go out through the exhaust outlets. If you have a good blast of air coming out, then I would say you have a good air flow going through your hybrid battery modules and actively cooling the hybrid batteries in the process. Which could mean longer hybrid battery life!!! If you don't feel a strong blast of air, there could be obstruction somewhere!! Thus a good time to consider cleaning the entire fan and air flow of the outlet vents and check if the cabin air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced. Obstruction in the cabin air filter means less air going out!

The outlets are on both sides under the right and left bumper. But the passenger side bumper is where the hybrid battery is and it should have the strongest air flow.

Just putting your hand under the right or left bumper you will feel the air flow coming out of the cabin. When doing this test, make sure all windows are closed. Safer to do this with 2 person. And don't activate the ready mode. Don't press the brake. Just hit the Power button twice to just activate the 12v mode just to run the fan for testing. If you need to do this with one person, detach the key from the remote and keep the door key with you.

Recirc also has some fresh air flowing in and through to the battery.

Also, as described in Toyota's New Car Features manual, if you have recirc mode selected and the car wants additional battery cooling, it will override your selection and switch to fresh. (I have never checked whether it changes the recirc/fresh indicator when it does this, or just does it in secret.)

So it's a nice thing to know about, and also nice to know you don't have to think about it much, because the car takes care of things.

My Scangauge 2 continuously monitors hybrid battery temperature, engine coolant temperature, inverter temperature and 12 volt battery voltage.

These are the most important parameters in a hybrid vehicle.

Those two back vents are routes for rodent entry.

You can pry them off from the outside, cover them with screens and put them back on.

They are retained by plastic tabs.

I didn’t know they were easily removable, but had no problems adding screens while they’re in place:

They are removable from the outside under the car. These are photos of my modification on my 2012 Prius v.

I used steel gutter guard screen material for under $4 from Lowe's.

Ah, it allows mesh install on the inside. Yeah, either works.

I wonder if there's any way to get corporate Toyota's attention on this, and the front, air inlet (behind glove box). It would relatively simple to add a more integrated rodent protection, at the factory.

Think I know the answer. :(

The one way air flow flags still work as designed.
