geeze it was a damn joke...but I can ASSURE you that an oil change and tire rotation for a damn 1.5L - 1.8L engine doesn't cost anywhere Near $239. I would demand my keys cause they ain't getting that much for such a simple job.

Oh - so it wasn't a proper service. In that case, $239 is too much - but has left most of the service undone.

well considering an average oil change for me here in the US is about $35, then yes, you overpaid...by a LOT!!

I would never just do an oil change. A full service.

First thing a dealer does when you go to trade a car here is to look at the Service History - "just" oil changes don't cut it here,

and just what else do you really think you need to waste money on every 5k miles? cause that's all that's needed until you get to the higher mileage

Doesn't work here - I generally sell my cars at 4-5 yrs (this has it's 5th birthday next week) - and, as I said, first thing a dealer will do is check the service history.

A dealer won't give a good price for a vehicle without a full service history - they'll rip a lot off, as they'll send it to auction, rather than put it on their own yard, which will only have cars with full service history.

It was for the 20k mile service. Surely, they checked the fluids, hoses, tires, brakes, wipers, air filters. What do you think that was worth?;) (The car has essentially never been off the highway).

I'm sure that is true, but unfortunately I don't know what the difference is or which is needed.
As someone who is frequently targeted for upsells by service centers...can someone give me a simple break down of these?
    • brake fluid change
    • brake fluid flush
    • brake fluid bleed
Which do we actually need to have done and when/how often?

Please don't be mean, I'm asking genuinely.
    Thank you, PriusChat friends.

According to the USA Toyota maintenance manual; the "brakes" only needs an inspection. What each dealership defines as an inspection is anyone's guess. IMHO; it's purposefully vague to avoid responsibility and lawsuits. The Toyota Canada manual states "change" every 3 years or 43K Km?? Try to rationalize that one same car, rolling off the same assembly line and factory.....

Brake fluid Change; could be as simple as taking a turkey baster and sucking the old fluid out of the reservoir and replacing it with new. Usually less than a pint.
Brake fluid Flush; replace ALL DOT3 brake fluid throughout the entire system by pushing ALL the old fluid out, replacing it with new fluid. More work, more fluid required; normally around a quart or two.
Brake Bleed; removing air pockets from the braking system.

How individual shops define and perform the tasks above is up for debate - and to make matters worse, shops will use - change and flush interchangeably - when they are clearly different and more time and product consuming procedures.
When they're caught in a lie; officiate and confuse the matter with double-talk and toss in references not germane to the matter at hand. We're seeing a lot of that in today's politics.:(

Hope this clears things up a bit...

Close, 48k kms. Screen grab from 2014 model year (before they completely stripped maintenance specifics out of the maintenance booklet, made it online only, albeit still there):

There's a brake fluid replacement link in my signature, what I did, more-or-less following the Toyota Repair Manual instruction for brake fluid replacement without Techstream. (On a phone turn it landscape to see signatures)

    Regarding the other terms:

Brake fluid flush ostensibly is needed only when there's contamination, or maybe long neglected system with water/rust. However, a lot of mechanics use the term for what's in fact a brake fluid "replacement", so here we are.

Brake fluid bleed has come to mean the process needed if air has gotten into the main brake components, say due to replacement. With the Prius it's a Techstream only affair, and even then arduous, doubly so with pirated Techstream and sketchy cables.
