    Headline: The 55 MPG "Unicorn" Lifted Gen 2 — A 7-Year Breakthrough
    The Journey:
I’ve been in the Gen 2 platform for 7 years—5 years with an '05 and the last 2 with this '06. For seven years, I’ve been chasing a specific goal: true off-road capability without the "lift penalty." I’ve experimented with every combination of stock wheels and oversized setups. I’ve seen the 35–38 MPG wall that usually comes when you add a lift, heavy tires, and even heavier wheels.
    The Discovery:
I’ve finally identified a specific synergy that breaks the "efficiency ceiling." By combining precision geometry with targeted underbody air management, I’ve achieved something most consider mathematically impossible: Running a 1.5" lift, heavy A/T tires, and heavy steel wheels while actually INCREASING fuel efficiency.
    The Build:
Vehicle: 2006 Prius (1.5" Prius Offroad Lift / HD Rear Springs)
Protection/Aero: Prius Offroad Skid Plate (Flush-mounted for airflow smoothing)
    Wheels/Tires: Heavy 15x6 Bassett Steel Rims / 205/70R15 Yokohama Geolandar A/Ts
The Math: 8.2% Diameter Increase (Stock 24.3" -> Current 26.3")
    The Results (Pre-Alignment):
On my test course between Terre Haute and Brazil, IN, I am currently hitting 48.2 MPG indicated, which is 52.15 actual adjusted MPG . IMG_6405.jpeg IMG_6459.jpeg IMG_6430.jpeg IMG_6405.jpeg IMG_6406.jpeg This is officially higher than the best MPG I ever achieved when either of my Gen 2s were 100% stock.
    What’s Next (Monday):
Taking the car to a pro 4x4 shop Monday to apply my final "Zero Everything" alignment script (0.00° Toe/Camber) using dual-angle rear shims and front camber bolts.
    The Goal:
Targeting 54–56 adjusted MPG for my final 100-mile run. I’ll be posting the official "Before and After" alignment printouts to verify these numbers for the record.
I’ve put in 7 years of work to prove you can have a lift, heavy tires, and heavy wheels without losing your MPG. Has anyone else seen 50+ actual MPG on a setup like this, or is this the new record?

And once I hit +50mpg on screen/ 54-56 adjusted mpg
I’ll share what I have found that makes this possible

    Epic!!!!

Your car reminds me of mine.

Started out trying to make it faster.

Then living in the high desert, need that skid plate and then just recently my newest upgrade for her is the Flatout GR Lite lift kit adjustable up to 3" over oem.

Rims are already light weight at just 9lbs each corner.

    I just achieved the impossible
I had a custom zero scrub 4 wheel alignment with shims and camber bolts installed
Installed a trailer hitch and skid plate

I heat molded the inner fender wells and used 3M body molding tape to seal all gaps

The steels wheels are Bassetts and designed with more weight around the lug than the outer wheel they are also dot approved and with the D hole design they push air out from the car reducing drag around the poked tires where as stock gen 2 wheels are designed to suck and direct air

I also had the wheels bead balanced rather than static weight balanced
This helps keeping momentum going and the wheels are not fighting to stay in balance

with the dynamic balancing reducing small wheel vibrations the car reacts to the on and off of the trotting/gliding
And I’m able to stay in glide longer and have found another sweet spot at 52 mph where the engine is running at a very low rpm and able to maintain 54mpg IMG_6516.jpeg IMG_6516.jpeg IMG_6516.jpeg IMG_6478.jpeg

I was getting 48 mpg on screen/100 miles continuously with 42/40 psi
I bumped that to 50psi in all 4 wheels

    Dashboard Display: 50.6 MPG
    Tire Correction: 50.6×1.082
    ACTUAL REAL-WORLD MPG: 54.75 MPG
