Safety isn't the only concern. You can charge LFP to 100% without the worry of degradation that happens with the other chemistries. LFP also doesn't have the concerns that come up with using cobalt.

I've been charging batteries for decades, is the concern overblown, other than cheap Chinese junk?

Japanese lithium cells are still the best and most trusted. Panasonic made them for Tesla and Toyota. But the new "wild fires" happening are now with ebikes, escooters and power banks. Most if not all Made in China. I won't be surprise if more laws are going to restrict their sales until they have been cleared for safety. But hopefully by that time better chemistry takes the market. The LTO cell's I'm using for solar off grid are made in Japan.

When you think about it. The three most advanced countries that went to war in WW2 make the best products. USA, Germany and Japan. Because to win a war you need to build reliable machines.

But now we are seeing a time where China is building almost everything, very fast and getting better.

Mentioning China as catching up modernly disregards how much technology they've stolen over the decades too. I guess all's fair in love & business.
other technology Powerhouses forgotten about are countries like israel, Taiwan & South korea. They have REALLY come ALONG.
What's really odd is when you consider number of patents per capita. Populations really skew who's doing all that grunt work

I’m just glad they also moved away from a totally centralized planning. Vietnam too. Decentralized business with individual initiatives is the economic engine of progress. It is why Ukraine can kick Russian butt on the battlefield.

The problem maybe in the charging and protections circuits, and not the battery itself.

Then some of these fires are caused by the gig job system rental e-scooter companies use. An individual gathers up the dead scooters in an area. Then charges them, at home, on filled up power strips, so a dozen scooters can be charging on one outlet.

I'd say the problem can be in both:

It's been a solid month & ½ or so since the last spontaneous Tesla fires. IIRC somewhere around Santa Monica 2 Tesla8 cybertrucks parked next to each other - suddenly, poof. These are more eye-catching because typically plugins are on the road or charging but not just sitting there. That's pretty rare. First time most people heard of such an event was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Poof! The entire kit & Kaboodle recalled

Byd had cars flame up on a boat going to Mexico, don’t remember if they actually identified the ignition point as it was a mix of many different types of vehicles including gas
