For whatever reasons, I'm going to try a Garmin in my Gen5. Anyone else do this? Placement suggestions? New model for purchase? Thanks. edit: I think I like this spot. All I have is a suction cup mount which doesn't work on that plastic surface, which is quite sloped.
You don't need to mount it that close, since the software will lock you out while moving. I think "voice command" will still work while moving; but that's limited. You'll need to pull over to a complete stop to make adjustment. I just suction-cup it to the lower left windscreen corner. Your position will require that mounting disk. They tend to pull up in hot summer months leaving a sticky mess and marring the portion of the dash. The bean bag one doesn't work either; since they hop across the dash when your in the mountains. I've found that the suction cup one on the glass as the best option; since you pull it down - when you don't need it. YMMV
I was going to put it on the little window, but then realized it was part of the door, lol. I like to look at the screen, so the closer the better. Lower left of windshield is a lonnnggg ways away, closer, airbag? I just used some Gorrilla double sided tape on the cup rubber and plastic dash. It won't last long. I'll have to get that mounting disk. I like that spot. If here was some other less messy way to do it... I'll poke around on the web a little.
Voice operation of phone seems just fine w/o CarPlay, using the Toyota interface, including the voice commands. Now, I'll have to go Garmin shopping. It's a drag you can't change a route on the fly. Maybe Bluetooth now. Have to check, as well as rummage through my bag of Garmin stuff to see if I have a disk (doubt it), but a new one will come with one.
Doing the same, with a gen 3. Yeah I was wondering. Would it still work, if there's some slack in the cord? Our Garmin is ancient, invariably just use to see our current location, what cross streets are coming up. If we need specific directions to a destination, use Google Maps on a phone, in the centre vent mount.
I just got a Garmin 53x at Walmart. $130. Cheapest they had in store. I like it. Glass screen. My old nuvi had plastic. You can turn off feature of requiring stopped to put in changes on the fly. I ordered a ball mount for the dash. Making do with some thinner double faced tape on the perimeter of a suction mount with the rubber removed. As near as it is to me, the five inch screen is perfect. It’s like welcoming an old friend back home.
I've got an old one and the on-the-fly changes went away after an update several years ago. I'll dig through the configuration menu; but I don't believe you can turn that off. Apple started that, then android auto, and eventually my Garmin; they call it a safety upgrade. If you can get yours to work "on-the-fly" again; let me know the model - so I can schedule an upgrade.
