Almost obliterated by a red SUV today. Driving home on an apartment lined residential street at about 30 mph with my son and daughter-in-law in the car (so about 450 pounds heavier than usual) when the SUV pulled out of a drive way on the other side, accelerating rapidly and turning left into our path as if we weren't there. Could not dodge right because of parked cars so stood on the brakes. The other driver finally noticed the impending collision and also slammed on the brakes, coming to a stop with their bumper just over the center line and about 3 feet in front of my bumper. No collision and nobody hurt. Well nobody hurt in our car, and I really don't care how shook up they were in the other.

The odd thing is, just as the Prius was coming to a stop, somewhere below 5 mph (not that I was looking at the speedometer!) the right front wheel gave a little hop. Maybe the tire slipped on something, the pavement was uneven, the suspension recoiled a little from the nose dip, or the ABS unlocked and relocked the brakes so that it felt like a hop. Strange sensation in any case. The car tracked straight the whole time. The ABS light didn't come on.

I suppose it is possible it did and I just didn't see it. That spot on the dash was within my visual field but my attention was very strongly focused on the large red mass rapidly approaching from the left and my brain may have decided not to process it in favor of dealing with the much bigger issue. Selective attention is a thing:
