Am I understanding your post correctly? In very good conditions you were getting 62mpg with the 19"stock wheels and about the same in these 17' aerodynamic wheels? So the wheel size really doesn't make much of a difference?

I just read somewhere (can't find it now) that this Prius can drive in electric mode on the highway somehow. Maybe I misunderstood.

 

I am sure you lose a lot of mpg with the 19" wheels—a whopping 10% according to the EPA.

Ride and everything else is also a lot worse with the 19" wheels, not to mention that the tires are very hard to find. So, it is a no-brainer to get the LE/SE unless there is something you really need in the higher trims.

 

I would be getting XLE but trying to confirm what this person with the LTD AWD was stating. I know there are many factors determining fuel economy but I'm perplexed by the people who know how to drive a Prius and are only getting 40-45 mpg in mild weather.

 

He replaced the 19" wheels with some aftermarket 17" wheels; so, it doesn't really compare to the 17" OEM wheels/tires. Regarding mpg info, your best bet is the EPA data. 40–45 mpg for a heavy-footed driver driving an XLE/Limited AWD sounds just about right.

Exactly.
There is unbiased testing, and then there is some dude claiming "blah,blah"....
And as always, it totally depends on how the car, any car, is driven.
Lately I've been driving my Gen3 into 20mph headwinds, in 20° temps, at a true 81 mph, (Posted 75mph, I'm rolling at +6, the speedo is +4 high) and I'm OK with the resulting 38-39 MPG.
If I were putzing around town then I'd be getting "+50 blah, blah..."

 

I get mostly the same efficiency with both wheel size. It shows a little difference in statistic because of different wheel size (Because they are not showing the same distance for the same destination). I also have a Prius 2001, 2005 and Prius C 2012. Then, i drive and maintain Toyota Hybrid since 2001 (I know how to drive them).

There is a loss when putting in and getting out energy of battery. Toyota Hybrid strategy is to run ICE only when it is going to be efficient (All energy comes from gasoline). Hybrid battery is mostly for running when ICE is not, to boost power when needed with an efficient ICE and for regenerative braking.

 

My meter says 74.3 mpg on this tank with ~250 miles to go. Crossing my fingers to break 70.
