Sorry to hear you left California feeling like this. We certainly aren't all like that. And I do believe that you can find self centered people in any state and in any country if you look hard enough for them.

Thanks to everyone who posted. :) I am happy that Priuschat is great community to talk to other fellow Prius drivers. You guys are great, expect for the nasty trolls. I understand that cultural norms/values have an effect on how people react in public. My impression was that Prius drivers had some type of comradery (community) between eachother. Those days must be gone. I will leave it at that. When I was in the military many moons ago, we had such a great comradery between us military folks and veterans. I still see it in the military today.

Either way, I will continue say hi to any PRIUS drivers out there. That's just the way I was brought up. If you see a black Prius driving from Riverside County to San Diego don't get scared if I say hi or something. I will not honk anymore, or try to approach you at a gas station! Take it easy everyone. B)

Does anyone know a PRIUS club in Riverside County or somewhere in the Inland Empire? I might need to start one...thx

I left CA in 1970. I hated it there. It's not that people are better or worse one place as another. It's the effect of over-crowding. Put too many rats in one cage and they'll eat each other. People are a lot like rats. That's why psychologists study rats. CA is over-crowded, has too much traffic (due to the over-crowding), and you can't breathe the air (due to same, though I've been told this has improved since I left). Northern CA is like a different country. But it's still over-crowded.

As for Prius-waving, when the Prius was rare, owners felt special, and felt a bond. Now that it's just another car in many places, owners have no special feeling about their car. It's a car. It gets great gas mileage. But you don't wave at every driver when you pass 50 of them in a day. Also, in 2004 we were early-adopters. We had a sense of adventure in trying out something new. Most of us waited months for our car. It was exciting. Now the current model has been on the streets for over 3 years, and has proven itself. It's one of the most reliable cars out there, and the most efficient and clean for its size. There's no more excitement in buying a Prius today than in buying any other new car. This is good. The Prius has gone mainstream. But it also means an end to the feeling that we are a club, and an end to waiving, except for those of us who still remember the good old days of being special and adventuresome.

As for the OP's experience: That's how people behave when there are too many of them. Southern Californians are not bad people. There's just too many people packed into that one small space, and they're reacting to it as anybody would. Me, I got out, and I'm sure glad I did.
