I've always changed my own oil, it's easy & takes me less time than waiting in a dealership "lounge" for an hour. But the Prius Prime has me for a loop, there seem to be 2 oil filters available for my year and engine.

One looks to be a pleated, cartridge-style filter and the other appears to be a standard, screw-in style filter.

How do I determine which oil filter I should use? And are they interchangeable? I tried searching, but all I saw were oil filter threads & not many stating which is the best one to use for an extended, 10,000 mile interval.

You need to go to the Toyota parts counter with your VIN or eye-ball it yourself. You don't want to crawl under there because someone on the internet steered you in the wrong direction. Make sure the parts guy looks it up - don't trust them if they just throw a filter at you. I had one idiot throw a cartridge filter at me for my 2012 Prius C. I told him that was the wrong filter and he said; "you don't know what your talking about". Asked for the department manger, very loudly. Another guy came out and said something similar, but very nicely and less condescending. Asked them both to take a walk outside with me or we can grab whomever currently in charge of this dealership, because I will be filing a complaint with Toyota Corporate. They both walked outside with me; and I pointed to my spin-on filter. The parts guy then goes, you didn't say it was a Prius C - I came back with, but both of you called a paying customer an idiot............ Told the dept. manger, you need to check your guys before backing them up.........

Guess I'm getting under my Prius to see which filter I have. Unfortunately, I have an entire shelf full of "wrong" oil filters that were purchased because of this exact reason. Some of them are for vehicles I no longer own. Yes, many times the parts counter guy (or gal) is just looking off a computer and can be dead wrong. Especially for cars that have a "mid-model year" where a VIN before April or May = the older style filter.
