So technological improvements always require shortened lifespans.
    Gottit.

I'm not sure there's anybody in this thread who has said so.

I did suggest that engineering choices to improve some metrics often involve trade-offs on other metrics. Sometimes one of those other metrics is longevity, and sometimes it isn't.

Starting in 1923 and ending in 1953, John Deere made a tractor that was nearly indestructible, called the Model D.
Such reliability built lifetime and rock-solid loyalty with many customers, which still stands today, although such reliability no longer exists in their products,

Another Iowa-based company, Maytag, apparently took a page from that book, and produced household appliances with legendary dependability. The iconic "Maytag repairman" was famous for having nothing to do.

Sadly, this philosophy seems mostly gone, as companies are mostly focused on next quarter profits. That leaves the field open to imports which may cost more, but always seem to be in much demand for their reliability. That is the strategy Japanese companies used to defeat tariff walls.

    That was clearly the implication.

That trade-offs are to be expected, and might involve longevity? Sure, I meant to imply that.

That such trade-offs "always require shortened lifespans"? That's a strawman you read in.

Sometimes the trade-off will be cost. Or weight. Or peak torque. Or whatever. There are as many possibilities as there are technologies and competing metrics to design for.

How much of that reputation was real, vs. how much was an image created by advertising campaigns?

Longevity is just one of many measures of product quality and performance and suitability. Maytag reviews on some other measures were mixed.

Not the way I read it.

I'll bet you believed Apple when they removed the headphone jack from the iPhone, in order to "make room for the battery."

The ten year recommendation for spares takes the protection from sun into account. Spares do see oxygen, which gets a boost to causing degradation from the inflated pressure, where they are stowed. I don't think carbon black would protect against that.

Unlike UV, oxygen can be causing issues where you can't see with the tire mounted.

I have had to do so in order to pass inspection; there was visible cracking on the outside of the tire. This was the car that could see as little as 3000 miles in a year. The daily driver car would have the tires wear out before UV damage became an issue.

It's not just for bigger battery.
    Better moisture intrusion prevention
    Thinner design potential
    Simplifying non-analog internals
    Superior sound quality

(...... & i'm not even an apple fan boy)

I don't do Apple, so haven't been listening to their rationales.

But in past threads, I have seen how you frequently appear to misunderstand our replies.

I never had an iPhone until after the jack was removed, but the lightning connector seems to work fine.

as for corporate excuses, I don't pay much attention. they're rarely consumer based. and just look at what all the tech bros are doing this administration, prostrating themselves

None of us has said so, but your insight into our inmost thoughts doesn't seem to depend on that.
