How much is your local "Trump at the Pump Tax?"

Driving habits are very important in order to achieve 50 or over in those cars, but in a Prius, and plug in versions, not nearly as difficult, especially starting with gen4. I was always able to exceed those old government economy figures by my driving. The 85 Camry hatchback I bought new for $11k was always in low-mid 40’s on trips, was amazed by it at the time because it was also comfortable and could carry a lot.

 

Ironically GM scuttled their Chevy (edit;VOLT) which primarily drove Electric for most owners - including yours truly. We had one, but like the Gen 5 Prius, if you're well North of 6 ft tall it's especially difficult to get in & out - once youre getting older & joints are stiffer.
If prices stay high, what a great opportunity it would be for GM to bring that Tech back into production in one form or another
The other manufacturer Chrysler gets a decent amount of sales with their plug-in minivan. Who would ever think something as heavy as a minivan could get mileage like ours, turning on how infrequent you burn gas.



Having just over 30,000 miles after nearly 9 years means yeah - we don't drive that far - especially since retiring.

Could be? I feel like I was being asked to believe that a horrible bogeyman had forced this on America, when as near as I can tell it was just another law that made it through both houses of congress and was signed into law by the president.

I don't have the clearest memory of this particular legislation coming around and being enacted but I didn't pay as much attention to politics back then- this was something that happened 15 years ago.

No. Remember that the demand charge, is charged only once per billing cycle, whether it occurs every day (or even twice a day), or only once the entire month. For the industrial rates I've reviewed in the past, it is computed as the highest 15 minute average of the whole billing cycle,

For an example, take my RAV4, using (rounded figures) of 14 kWh of energy per charge, and a power rate of either 1.4 kW on L1, or 7 kW on L2.

Regardless of power rate, the 14 kWh (at $0.05/kWh) element costs $0.70. Done every day all month, that adds up to $21 for the month.

If charged only outside peak hours, demand charge is $0.00. Zero. Nada.

If charged during peak hours even once at L1, that adds an extra $5.60 for the entire month. But doing it every day doesn't add any more, it still costs just $5.60 for the entire month.

If charged during peak hours even once at full L2, that adds an extra $28.00 for the entire month. But doing it every day doesn't add any more, it still costs just $28.00 for the entire month.

Adding the energy and demand charges, that means charging every day will cost either $21.00, or $26.60, or $49.00 for the whole month, depending on rate and time of day.

But note that if you charge just a single day during the entire month, the cost will be either $0.70, or $6.30, or $28.70, depending on rate and time of day. That means the per-kWh price will be either $0.05, or $0.45, or $4.05/kWh. That higher rate is equivalent to buying gasoline at $26/gallon.

If based on 15 minute averages, the careless or unlucky customer who accidentally runs just 15 minutes into the peak period just once, will pay $16.05/kWh for those few offending kWhs.

They must avoid charging every peak period for the entire billing cycle. If they charge during peak period even once during the billing month, their demand charge will be the same as if they did it during every peak period.

 

My BMW i3 REx was somewhat similar with 28 kWh battery after 9 years and 108 mi range. Its L2 charges at 30 A (240 * 30 = 7.2 kW) and 50 kW fast DC charging, CCS-1. My brother 4 of 5 loves it.

Still a little over $6 and a little under depending on station in my area. That’s a significant 47 tax at the pump for a gallon of regular.

 

We've seen a small price reduction here.

I have read that we (nationally speaking) are emptying our strategic petroleum reserves at an unprecedented rate.

Perhaps someday there will be a good book about all the market manipulation going on behind the scenes. I hope I get a chance to read it before I need to burn its pages for winter heat.

Could you may have read that in 2022 or 2023 when the draw down was precipitous? It seems to have regularly increased since early 2024.

The report I read was much more recent. It didn't offer any quantitative info, so I can't directly compare it to any prior drawdown. I'm left to borrow their characterization- "unprecedented."

 

The monthly data is on the bottom through 3/26 on the linked chart April is missing. During 45 it lowered about 10% from start if term to end. President Biden about 35-40%, roughly calculating. Onward the data will go, if it can be trusted now no one knows. The present admin has no problem posting fake numbers or news. Probably can be trusted as it is just a measurement of the oil stored.

April 2026 is 413 million barrels.

I wonder if oil (the kind in an ICE) prices are tracking crude oil prices too, and with how much delay. That stuff is after all ~80% oil, and much of the ~20% additives are probably derived from oil (after many chemical reactions).

 

Back up to $5.89 for midgrade, up a dime this weekend. Cheapest on-island is ~a dollar less, but not Top Tier fuel.

 

He probably saw a news report similar report to what I saw in the past couple weeks. After sharply criticizing P46 during the campaign for drawing it down, P47 is now drawing it down faster than P46 ever did, even though domestic gas prices haven't risen to the same levels as the post-Ukraine-invasion price spike that drove the earlier drawdown.

P47 claims (falsely, as the EIA data shows) that P45 filled it up, not lowered it. The peak was reached during P44, though net change over that whole term was about a 1% reduction.

Is there any truth to something I heard? I heard T tried to refill the reserve back to 700 million barrels at $29 a barrel during covid, but it was shot down by Democrats lead by Schumer, claiming it was a bailout for oil companies.

Any truth to that?
