Apple Announces New CarPlay Features on iOS 27, Including Video Apps - MacRumors Hopefully Toyota will enable this feature as soon as iOS 27 is available….not holding my breath
Truly this is what has been missing from the driving experience. Video playing on the multimedia head unit. It definitely will not be distracting to drivers who are already barely paying attention. Really looking forward to all this.
My comment wasn't limited to watching videos while the car was in motion. The main screen in most cars is not in the ideal position for watching videos. Then the phone's display is likely better than what the car company picked for showing HVAC controls.
No, it's actually pretty good. Barely below eye level. And if you've got the 12.3" screen, the size is pretty good. I believe it shows videos in at least 720p, maybe 1080, so the resolution is just as good as what you see on your phone. And you can relax and not have to hold your phone while watching something. (I have my display set up to watch/listen to YouTube videos on highway drives. Mostly long form stuff like Drachinifel, Perun, D&D games, or movies/TV shows I've watched many times so I only have to listen to the audio.)
I have an Android phone and use an app called CarStream. I think I also had to use an app called AAAD(Android Auto Apps Downloader) to get everything working, but it's been almost three years since I set it all up, and I don't completely remember all the steps(I don't change phones often - I'm still using a Samsung S22 from 2022 or '23). I was able to get CarStream running, but I've never been able to get any of the full mirroring apps to work like Screen2Auto, AA Mirror, etc. But that's fine for me because all I really want to do is play videos for the background noise.
There are cheap usb plugins that do phone streaming on Carplay systems now. Maybe Apple is thinking about adding it by default so they can enforce when it is used and perhaps lockout certain usb functions.
