We very seriously squandered our credibility and any good will when we "dealt with" their fledgling democracy back in 1953, forcing them back into an authoritarian regime. Most of the population has had no reason to love or trust us ever since.

 

Most of us would have preferred that when the the US "did something" that it was well planned, well executed, well coordinated with our allies, cost effective, and furthered our goals. This operation was none of those things. When things went poorly the clown show which is the Trump administration could only throw tantrums and lie and lie and lie. Trump has no comprehension that having spent most of this term insulting and literally threatening all of our allies that they in turn would be more than willing to let him hang himself. Unfortunately he's taking the rest of the world along for the ride. This is the difference between a war run by a man baby like Trump and a professional exercise like the first Gulf war, which was run by a competent adult, Geoge HW Bush.

In other words, Iran gets reparations. Let's review, which side of a conflict collects the reparations? Anybody who answered "the loser" needs to take a remedial history class. Winning, so much winning. Except for the losing I guess.

There is verbiage to the effect that this is all "investment". Putting real money into a country where the rule of law does not protect foreign investments is a pretty foolish gamble. It might pay off if enough palms are greased, but as often as not the investment will all be confiscated at some point.

The eye opener is #7, where the US will seek to remove all sanctions on Iran. Not just the ones from our government, but also those from the UN and the IAEA.

#8 says Iran will not make nuclear weapons and their enriched uranium will be diluted under IAEA supervision. I have no doubt that "all 100 lbs" of their enriched uranium will be so diluted - with the "lost during the war" 300 lbs further processed, packaged into warheads, and ready to go for the next round.

The thing is, this agreement would be a reasonable thing if it was between the US and a successor Iranian government which consisted of freely elected representatives - with the mullahs locked out of the room. Then it would have been a sort of pro-democracy Marshall plan. Trump was too stupid to wage a real war, and he is too stupid to find a way out that isn't tantamount to surrender - to the existing Iranian government.

FWIW; I found out about that Black-hawk that recent got shot down over the Strait from the BBC news after watching the nightly news @ 1830 PST. It was on the internet; but you had to search for it. Go through decades & Decades of work saving, & that paper junk dollar hardly keeps even with inflation, yet if you get a little interest from the bank - then you have to get taxed on interest/dollars that pay only to the point where they barely offset their original value but for the fact now you have to pay tax on the interest. LOL.

The process you describe is called inflation. The difference between inflation and deflation is not regional pronunciation.

The point about the recent pace of inflation is that distant inflation doesn't distort our perception of prices and values like very recent inflation does. Sure, we can know that 50 years ago a new car might be $5,000, but I doubt many of us would feel discomfort at cars now being many more dollars. We know some inflation over time is a feature of life and how we rolled our eyes about old people talking about five cent candy bars. On the other hand, 2020 feels very recent to lots of us who remember sub the $20,000 cars and notice what cars in the comparable part of the market cost now.

It's true that some of the current gasoline price is the result of a constriction in supply on the other side of the world and that in a global market, that matters. It is also true, and consistent with your observation of inflation, that gasoline at $4.50 now isn't twice as expensive as $2.25 gasoline in 2019 because those aren't the same dollars.

An important point about recent inflation (2021-22, and now 2026) is that while we oldsters remember much worse, people under age 40-something have no living memory of similar levels, so it has been a big shock for them.

 

What licenses do FOX News and CNN have? Certainly not any public airwaves broadcast licenses, as both are cable systems. We don't issue licenses to exercise First Amendment rights.

And what government agency is the determiner of The Truth vs Fake News? I thought that was left to juries in slander / libel / defamation lawsuits. I don't recall Tucker Carlson causing FOX any fines, just a settlement in a civil lawsuit.
